The 2010 Maine gubernatorial election was a mess. LePage won by a margin of less than 2% in a four-person field. His closest opponent was not a Democrat, but former Democrat turned independent Eliot Cutler. Apparently Cutler has no regrets about handing the Pine Tree State over to the tender mercies of Paul "Vaseline" LePage as Cutler has announced his intention of running again in 2014. However, Maddow reports tonight that LePage is considering a run for one of Maine's two Congressional seats next year because it "can't be any worse in Washington than it is here." Meanwhile former Democratic Congressman Mike Michaud has also announced his intention to run for governor. Whether the Democrats can consolidate around Michaud is an open question, as is whether they can sufficiently marginalize Cutler to avoid another minority Republican victory.

Maine has a history of political mavericks. For much of my early life during the 1950s the state was represented by the only woman in the Senate, Margaret Chase Smith. Despite her nominal Republican partisanship, Chase supported many policies of Democratic presidents like Roosevelt and Truman and fought against fellow Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy during his reign of terror.

Maine had two Republican women as Senators as recently as 2012 when Olympia Snowe retired in disgust at the level of partisan conflict in that body. She was succeeded by former governor Angus King, also a declared independent, who like his Vermont counterpart, former Socialist turned independent Bernie Sanders, caucuses with the Democrats. The other Senator, Susan Collins, has been a more mainstream Republican though she, too, has broken ranks over issues like childrens' health care and the 2009 stimulus.

'Hentai' Anime Episodes Banned in Russia as Child Pornography:

"Starting in April, the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications
received complaints of alleged child pornography about 13 anime episodes on the
Russian social network Vkontakte. After evaluating the situation and bringing in
outside experts, the service declared that the anime in the "hentai" genre is child
pornography. Under last year's "About Child Protection from Information Harming
Their Health and Development" law, such material must therefore be banned from
hosts and service providers."

Buddhism : The Next "Religion of Peace", except muslims are always worse anyway because they hate freedom and civilization. I learned about Islam from Jihad Watch and my friends' blogs.

Lawyers eye NSA data as treasure trove for evidence in murder, divorce cases:

"The National Security Agency has spent years demanding that companies turn over
their data. Now, the spy agency finds the shoe is on the other foot. A defendant in a
Florida murder trial says telephone records collected by the NSA as part of its
surveillance programs hold evidence that would help prove his innocence, and his
lawyer has demanded that prosecutors produce those records. On Wednesday, the
federal government filed a motion saying it would refuse, citing national security. But
experts say the novel legal argument could encourage other lawyers to fight for
access to the newly disclosed NSA surveillance database.

"What's good for the goose is good for the gander, I guess," said George
Washington University privacy law expert Dan Solove. "In a way, it's kind of ironic.""

I was also wondering the same thing. If that hentai anime blatantly portrays minors who are truly physically un-adult-like, I would agree with the ban. If not, the Russian authorities would be nothing short of utter ridiculous.

The problem is in determining that. There was some nonsense in Australia about fully adult small-breasted women in pornography being deemed "child pornography".

Seriously ... that's how stupid this flies. Sexist, anti-science, and body-type-shaming all in one smack.

It may be same religion but Tibetan Buddhism and the Theravada school practised in Burma are as distinct as Shia and Sunni...
