Actually, I believe it was more like the mangaka was under pressure to finish it, with that new manga "ban" (not exactly a ban, but that's what most people call it) law coming into effect July last year.

It's not the author's choice. He was forced to shut down the series because of the "anti-otaku" law in Japan.
I've read the law, translated, and it's both very confusing and ambiguous. So much so that a manga could be banned, and the mangaka arrested for portraying/ promoting ANY "criminal" activity in the story. Incest (the primary point of the story Aki-Sora) certainly qualifies. Of course, this law only applies to anime and manga. "Artistic" novels are exempt. Otherwise the prime minister who proposed AND SIGNED the law would have to arrest himself and ban his own books, seeing as they have graphic depictions and real-life illustrations of rape, gang-rape, murder, and mutilation of underage girls. Note: He continues to write these "artistic" novels while decrying manga and anime as ruining the "morality" of the country. |

If you look at the dialogue from the previous chapter, and combine it with the afterword about the authors friend, you understand what the author was trying to say. Her friend died of cancer, living his last moments to the fullest he could for the sake of his dream of being an author. She had a dream after his passing, about him leaving for the next life and her wanting to say something, but not being able to. The point is that we leave life with so many things undone, unsaid, and unknown. Time is precious, and you should fill it with as much as you can, while you can. With that, the ending of Aki Sora is that the characters get that second chance to meet, to finish that conversation that ended at that train. Morality and character issues aside, I found the ending quite poetic. Without that afterward, the ending wouldn't have worked nearly as well.
