I voted for Zero on the basis that he has the most developed back story of all the characters and hence the most emotionally complicated moments (Yuuki does too, to an extent, but I have an automatic abhorrence toward female leads so...) I'd like to point out that this is the exact reason why Sasuke is popular in Naruto.

Matt from Death Note has one of the biggest fanbase despite his 2 minutes on screen. Shiki's the same except that he has more background and his actions are adorable. For more reasons, ask all those bloggers who follow VK for Shiki.
