Not sure about the contents of the movie, but I know it's being directed by Hideo Nakata. That's the man behind the Japanese Ring movies and Darkwater, among others, so I think it will be something to look forward to.

Sigh...Envy those who are living in Japan, Taiwan n HK since, they can get to see movie on the official opening day itself 9Feb08. Wonder how long must I wait to see it...

I just fisnished watching the second movie and I must say it was AWESOME.
Considering other live-action movies that been adapted from animes (or mangas) this had not only been a pleasant surprise but DN Movies can also probably be an enjoyable expirance for people who arent into anime.

Death Note AND Death Note: The Last Name Based On Popular Anime And Manga Series That Have Taken Japan And North America By Storm

Theater information follows at the end of this release and future screenings will continue throughout 2008. VIZ Pictures also plans to release Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name on DVD in the summer of 2008.

Death Note is based on the hit supernatural action mystery manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The live-action film, directed by Shusuke Kaneko, known as a director of popular monster film “Gamera” series, was released in 2006 and mirrors the manga's story of Light Yagami, an ace student with great prospects who is bored out of his mind. All of that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god named Ryuk. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals mysteriously begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to investigate, and he is soon hot on the trail of Light, who must now reevaluate his one noble goal. Both Light and L believe themselves to be on the side of justice, and the two match wits trying to show exactly which of them is "good" and which of them is "evil."

The film's sequel, Death Note: The Last Name, was a hit in Japan, staying #1 for four straight weeks. While it closely followed major plot elements from the original manga series, several new key story differences were also introduced. Both films star Takeshi Kaga, who is widely known by North American audiences as the flamboyant host of TV's Iron Chef.

From what I deduce, the one disadvantage that holds him back would also serve to be his ultimate trump card. Since L is fated to die "peacefully" at the 23rd day, that means he's practically indestructible before then, and L is putting that fact to good use.

There seems to be some sort of cameo by Misa and even Ryuk, as well as the two DNs. Perhaps L might put these two to good use as well.

L died in DN2. This movie is about his last 23 days... before he died "peacefully" after eating the chocolate with Watari's photo lying next to him in DN2. Perhaps, it will be better with the word "spin-off" instead. Yea, he is supposed to be invincible since he is not supposed to be dead should anything happened within that 23 days...

Guess that we have to wait for less than a month to see what the movie will be truly be...

I m juz glad that the Chinese name chosen for this movie is not literally translated from the title...

I love the Live Action !!!! Everything goes smoothly and able to enthrall the audience till the end Especially I prefer LA's ending to manga's ending!!!

As L is dying, Light admits to him that he is Kira. However, it is revealed later that L faked his death. L had already written his own name in Misa's Death Note (replacing Misa's Note with a fake copy), setting his death for the maximum of 23 days, thus overriding Rem's DN. The investigation team surrounds Light, shooting him when he attempts to write on the hidden piece of DN in his watch. In a final gambit, Light asks Ryuk to kill the investigation team, but Ryuk writes down Light's name instead. Light dies in his father's arms. L obtains possession of both Death Notes and burns them. Twenty days later, he dies a peaceful death after being congratulated by Soichiro. Soichiro agrees to not tell his family that Light was really Kira. The film concludes with events that take place one year later on the anniversary of Light's birthday. Light's mother and sister are making a cake in the kitchen in his memory. When Sayu is told to bring her father an umbrella because it's snowing, she tells her father that crimes are increasing lately, Soichiro asks whether she wants Kira to come back, she says in her tears, "No way, Kira killed nii-chan..." Soichiro hopes that she will never find out the truth. Misa wonders about the gaps in her memory, unable to remember something important about Light....

I just watched this movie...some thoughts:

I think it's lame. The plot is lame (come on, using a virus to kill human population to save the environment? How original) and there's no battle of wits that we love so much. The villains are all idiots and bland. The only redeemable point of this movie is the humor, L is still as funny as usual

The best scene for this movie is the death of a certain professor. It's so over dramatic that it is freaking hilarious. Those who have watched the movie will know what I mean

Overall...4/10. I don't really recommend this movie unless you are a die hard L fan
