What DOES it mean? (to anyone who knows Japanese).
Hias all, pretty fresh Narutofan here, got like 90 epsidoes handed to me by my brother some 2 months ago. That was a nice couple of days spent behind the TV..
Anyhow, one thing is slowly driving me insane. Naruto ends pretty much every other sentence with something like "sotobayo" or just plain "bayyo" or something. No other character uses this expression, I have a Japanse girls in my university project group but she couldnt understand me at all and Torrent dont work on universitys computers so.. Ok, so what does it mean? If you at all understand what I am talking about? Yours Umbrood |

DATTEBAYO!!!
I think it means something like "you know", like Raijin's (FFVIII) sentence ending. Or it could be something like Higure's (Rockman EXE) "huh" (English) or "demasu" (Japanese). It's just an individual thing though, just like the two I just mentioned. |

It's not a regional thing. Kishimoto uses some creative speech for his characters. From Sakura's meaningless "Shan~naro!" to Konohamaru ending practically every sentence with "kore." Naruto's "da tteba yo" is like that. "Tteba" is a sentence ending for when you've already said something.
Here's an example: You're following your friend who walks fast. You yell "Matte!" ('matte' means 'wait), but they don't stop. You yell "Matte tteba!" which would probably translate directly into "I'm telling you to wait!" "Yo" is just an emphatic you hear all of the time. "Da" is an informal way to say "desu." "Desu" has a complicated meaning, as it means that something is something. In other words, Naruto is stating that he's saying something while he's saying it. |

Hmm... i really think you are stretching some of the words, like in umino, while umi means sea and no is a possesive particle, it doesnt work out, since Japanese names have a sense by itself

Overall I think it's a good list. (Not that my japanese vocabulary is that good, but it seems to be ok, except for the ~kage thing... i dont think the kage part translates directly as shadow) |

well, Haruno and Umino could be seen as puns, like..
Haruno Sakura is "cherry blossoms of spring" and Umino Iruka is "dolphin of the sea" you get it? There are many puns in Naruto names. Uzumaki means "whirlpool" for example.. Whirpools are common in the city of "Naruto" Oh, and Neji does mean screw, but not in that sense.. The word "screw" can be related to his Taijutsu, Kaiten. The movement of Kaiten looks like a screw. "Shika" means "deer", and "maru" is a common ending for a boy's name. "Nara" is a prefecture in Japan that is famous for tame, wild deer. It's where I grew up, so I know it very well. I'm fond of Shikamaru~! Itachi is a weasel. This animal was once believed to be somewhat magical in Japan. There is a myth that if you see an Itachi, or hear its voice, something bad would happen to you. Last edited by MidoriShinobi; 2004-10-06 at 21:09. |
