Also, that looked as if it started off as a friendly battle between Nanoha and Signum...Somehow that didn't seem very friendly after the fight got under way.

Really fun doujin, Nanoha and Signum get really into it whit their battle xDDD!! i would like to see that more frequently(it's implied that Signum is a battle maniac but we only get glimpses of that on supplemental material, the only true example is her fight with Nanoha at the end of StrikerS manga), when in that mode she's a lot less stoic and very enthusiastic.

I think the fight escalated like that because Signum was irritated at how Nanoha was making Fate worry, or at least something along those lines.
