For the best game song ever, I agree with Imazul; it would be the Chrono Cross theme song, Time's Scar.

I won't deny Time's Scar is a great game piece, I really really liked this project from Mitsuda, even more than any of his other works. It's different, not mainstream, but a stream in its own right. I personally like "time before dreamwatch", and playing Radical Dreamers on guitar and singing is a great experience. I haven't gotten far enough in Xenosaga Eps 1 to say if I like it. I hear there are great tunes later on, but I've heard some disappointing stuff so far. Anyways, if I had to pick an 8-bit soundtrack, I'd go with either Skull Castle stages 3&4 (mega man 3) or any stage past stage 4 in Ninja Gaiden 3.

Pfft. This is easy - Shenmue's music (composed by the amazing Yuzo Koshiro) is the best. Yes, it's a fact, not an opinion. Seriously. Everyone will agree with me. By force, if necessary.

Outside of that, I love the soundtracks to the Rockman / Rockman X series, the Guilty Gear series' soundtracks are excellent, and of course Koji Kondo's music in the Legend of Zelda series is always awesome.

The Halo series OSTs are way above any other soundtrack for me. Martin O'Donnell (and Michael Salvatori) are pure geniuses at what they do, and I'm pretty much in awe whenever I hear a track of theirs. Top track from them has to be "Never Forget" off of the Halo 3 OST. Perfect.

As for other OSTs I can't think of 10, so I guess;

- Metal Gear Solid series (particularly GotP and SoL)
- FFX
- Red Dead Redemption
- SSX Tricky (and SSX 3)
- GTA San Andreas

'Tis true, 'tis true indeed. Alas, I doubt we'll ever get to hear more Shenmue music. Never give up hope though.

Anyway, I rarely like a whole OST apart from one or two tracks per game (the same thing with normal music), so I won't be able to fill all five, let alone ten, requirements but here are my favorites:

1. Nier
2. Bayonetta
3. Final Fantasy VIII
4. Phantasy Star Online

And I guess that's it already though I'd like to honorable mention the Metroid Prime trilogy.

Probably obscure, but clearly the best game soundtracks I've ever heard, no contest: Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War and Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Both the Ace Combat (Keiki Kobayashi is simply the best game music composer, hands down :P) and Ys series' soundtracks are made of pure win overall, but those stand out.

Honorable mention to Final Fantasy VIII and IX, the Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney series, and the Call of Duty series. Halo has good stuff as well but I personally find it overrated.

As for what is the best? Wow, so many to choose from... I think if I had to go with one right now I would say Pharaoh... A very odd choice and most people have probably never even heard of it lol. But on a different day I would probably say something else. Age of Mythology, Medieval Total War, Seven Kingdoms, Total Annihilation, Thief, Command and Conquer, all of these and more are competing for the top spot.

Out of MIDI soundtracks, Castlevania 4 wins hands down. Up to a year ago or so I had never even played any SNES or NES game so there's not even nostalgia at play here.
