it happened as soon as the filler episodes came. it was ranked 4th during the sister arc with each cast being very likable but the filler i didn't think it was too bad since i get to see saten again( i blame those generic lame villains).

That's pretty spurious logic. Monogatari Second Series also isn't even listed on that ranking, and its popularity is pretty undeniable among the hardcore fans. I don't think it's because it's too mainstream to be popular, because that doesn't make any sense. Not to mention Genei o Kakeru Taiyou definitely didn't get that big of an interest boost all of a sudden among the anime community at large.

These ranking/surveys are dime-a-dozen and can't really be used to support any argument other than what it so happened the particular magazine's userbase happened to write-in about at the time. You can't draw any broader conclusions from it.

Newtype also had Railgun S dropping to 8th place from 3rd place. And Touma manages to rank 7th place in the male characters part despite not appearing at all.
