Joel Shumacher made the second most successful Batman movie, influenced the next decade of movies, and made some of the most popular character of the decade?
You can claim that Fukuda is a bad director, you can claim that the popularity of Gundam Seed, and Gundam Seed Destiny where not warranted, but you can't claim that the series was not hugely popular. You can't possibly deny that Lacus Clyne, Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, and Cagalli Yuna Atha where 4 of the most popular characters in the past decade. Kira Yamato was the first character to be able to challenge Char's popularity. Look at Newtype polls, look at Animage's reader chosen awards, Gundam Seed/GSD dominated both. This is what he should have said: "During Destiny, I always knew Maaya had her eyes on someone. But I never thought that it will be Suzumura.. This makes NO sense to me! Probably just like how Lunamaria x Shinn made no sense to SEED fans.. OW SH*T!"

Also, the Newtype and Animage Reader's Choice polls, as with most "reader's choice" polls, are very much a joke. I can also argue that GSD, or at least midway throughout the series, suffered through the same Executive Meddling that Victory, Wing, X, and recently, 00, went through. At the time, GSD was going against Full Metal Alchemist. On Seed, Fukuda said that the producers were lenient on him.

Gundam Seed Destiny never went against Fullmetal Alchemist! They where in the exact same timeslot, and Gundam Seed Destiny came on after Fullmetal Alchemist finished (the massive success of those three shows gave that timeslot a legendary appeal that was immediately squashed by Blood+).
You think the reader polls are jokes only because they disagree with your view that Gundam Seed, and Gundam Seed Destiny where not hugely popular. |

When it comes to popularity, GSD is to Japan as the Twilight series is to the US.

Also, about the Anime Grand Prix Awards, are they anime's equivalent of the Oscars? Finally, and I've mentioned it already, Fukuda hasn't done anything notable in anime after the GSD Specials were completed, and again, it's prolly because he's taking of his sick wife, and, based on recent pics of him, I'm guessing that he's been giving lectures at various colleges in Japan. And to play Devil's Advocate, did GSD prolly suffer from the same Executive Meddling that some past Gundam works went through (e.g., Kira being thrust back into the spotlight because he was still over with the Japanese audience and Shinn not getting over as Sunrise expected)?

An Athrun's Counterattack of some sort would indeed be nice.
As for what I would envision: -the setting would be 20-30 years later (one generation, could be workable even another generation further). -the theme would be again human genetics, human nature and freedom, with a sprinkling of Newtypes. -main protagonist(s): La FlagaxRamiel child(ren), bound for a special school. -protagonist mentor: moar Al La Flaga clone, but a perfected one, born after Destiny. Should wear sunglasses. -protagonists boss: a Coordinator female biologist, former assistant to Dulindall, seeks to gather and instruct exceptional Naturals. Despise "Coordination" due to being genetically sterile (patched DNA incompatible with any specimen of the human race), perfected and bore several Al La Flaga clones. -protagonist organization: ARGO (placeholder), institution dedicated to space exploration and settling, has several facilities across the Solar System dedicated to research on fusion, antimatter production and deep space operating, base of operation is the Argo Colony, where it's special school, the Eugen Institute, is. -Kira & Lacus: worn out by decades of absolute power and never ending peacekeeping operations. Have seen many die along the way. -PLANT: police the Earth Sphere and the Solar System, there is growing discontent (could be even better in a 50 years timeskip). -Yzark, Dearka, Shinn and Lunamaria ought to be alive and senior officers in ZAFT. Meyrin died. -Orb has sunk into the sea (or plays no significant role). -There is no classical main antagonist per see, altough some ZAFT youngster pilots can play the role in the beginning. -Athrun is THE Antagonist: he no longer pilots after the death of Meyrin, and has retired to research cybernetics again. Cannot forgive Kira for the death of Meyrin, sees Kira & Lacus way as flawed and is working instead to establish a cybernetic society. Has developed advanced AI, life-like androids, combat androids and AI driven MS's. Is looking to steal ARGO for complementary technologies to perfect his cybernetic war machine and topple ZAFT and all governments. -Main Gundam is an ARGO prototype designed for the Mentor, has fusion powered WOL and features from the Stargazer (light bending and AI), as well as a novel sensor and control system. -Upgrade Main Gundam is basically an all-range Solar Ray by itself. -ZAFT mecha are derivatives from a single standard and highly modular, aces have special packages. NJC is optional. Transformables in the lot. -Athrun main grunt is the Crusher, basically a MS sized android built as a Gundam. -Athrun final MS's are Crusher Tyrant, modelled from Kira data. -Athrun is also relying on a set of androids modelled after his former (young) friends. Some of those have a high degree of independence and end up confronting their models, and question their purposes. -By the second half, Athrun is mostly a witness to what he has set, and has relinquished full control to his AI. -Finale is a great battle around an ARGO facility turned WMD by the AI. Ultimately Argo Colony departs the Solar System and the AI cease action due to error parameter (system having changed from closed to open).

Yeah I couldn't bring myself to like Cagalli all that much myself, in either season, and I like Meyrin that much more, natural bias for redheads and brunettes aside. Killing her would just piss me off about as much as killing Flay did.
Especially if it's something stupid or pointless.

And Gundam SEED is Batman Forever...A movie that on it's own was pretty good IMO, but because the sequel was such utter trash (Like GSD) it makes the whole franchise seem worthless...
On the Fukuda tweets = That is why Twitter is dumb...
