Whenever Kajiura makes heavy use of tubular bells and chorals, things are serious.
The cluster mention of Kajiura and tubular bells always stirs me up... given that she's a Mike Oldfield fan (and me too, for that matter). Too bad she doesn't use them all that often. "Interval" from Double Cast OST and a couple of Madlax tracks remain most packed examples.
Meanwhile, there are reports/rumours that BD version of ep 1 features a slightly different rendition of Mami's theme. Not only in terms of speed, but with some lyrics and vocal tweaks. Yuki Kajiura pulled into the vortex of SHAFTness?

It's definitely different from the first TV-airing, that I can say for sure. Whether it's an actual new rendition though, I can't tell.

Alas, the"full" OSTs don't look as full as the usual stuff. At least Vol 1 has 13 tracks, and the estimated length is about 40 minutes or so. If Vol 2 is like that, too, they will sum up to a one-CD OST of 20 tracks, pretty much the standard for one-cour shows. I guess if it weren't for Siny selling these CDs bundled, there would be no point in splitting the OST in the first place.
Which doesn't prevent me from considering this one of Kajiura's best works.
The bundling was just stupid, they could have made Oricon history and a killing with stand alone release. I know this decision was probably made way back when the popularity was still uncertain, they still could have made a cover, booklet and released it. As it is they are missing out on a sizable chunk of income.

You hire Yuki Kajiura and you're uncertain about how the OST will sell? True, her albums don't always get as much hype as .hack/SIGN and the Gundam Seed ED once did (all of Tsubasa Chronicle OSTs hung around Top 30 which redefines underrated, if you ask me), but you can expect some profit regardless of any factors. Kajiura is Kajiura, her music tends to settle down in playlists for quite longer than the period of the show-related hype.
Then again, Sony pulled off some nice trolling with Kara no Kyoukai, first simply bundling the complete soundtracks "as is" with DVDs (and giving us tracklists full of M##s), then compiling the creams into a stand-alone CD. People who cared for the OST alone and had been faithfully buying all DVDs for the sake of it, were less than happy.

Indeed. I won't buy the BDs-- Just buying KamiNomi is already driving me to near bankrupcy, and while Madoka is by far a better show, it's also selling approximately 20 times as well already... However, I would have picked up the soundtrack in the blink of an eye had they only released it separately. I already have both the OP- and ED-singles, and I did in fact try to find the soundtrack and buy that too, until I learned that it was a BluRay-exclusive bonus...
Aniplex or whomever made this decision, I am not amused.

At least, Sony, you would redeem yourself by giving us OST Vol 3 as well, with some bonuses, inspired music and rearrangements on par with Noir Blanc Dance. Hint taken?

Aha! I wasn't just imagining it then that it was different. The theme is different and the timing is changed a bit. It shifts key right after Mami completes her transformation. Nothing significant really but interesting that it was done.
I have begun doing some translation of the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Drama CD
Spoiler for Drama CD translation:
Cat: Meow!
Homura: Ah!
Cat: Meeeooowww…
Homura: Little Black Cat (kuroneko-chan), where’s your collar? Were you abandoned/thrown away?
Cat: Meow…
Homura: *giggles* How cute. Ah, you see, I’m going to transfer schools today. I wonder if I’ll be alright?
Cat: Meeeooowww…
Homura: Oh? What’s wrong? Could it be... that you’re hungry? I have cookies. Would you like some?
Cat: Meow…
Homura: You’re so small, are you all alone?
Cat: Meeoow…
Homura: I see. Just like me.
Madoka: Magical Girl Madoka Magica
Homura: Drama Cd
M+H: Memories of You
Kazuko: Eh hm! I have something important to discuss with all of you today! Make sure you pay attention! When eating cream puffs, do you eat them off plates or eat them by hand? Okay, answer Nakazawa-kun!
Nakazawa: Um, er… I think, either way is fine but washing the plate after is a bother, so you might not need it?
Kazuko: That is absolutely correct! It’s fine if you don’t bring out plates for them! You should never judge a woman’s charm/appeal based on how she serves up cream puffs! Okay, you can sit now.
Nakazawa: Yes ma’am…
Kazuko: Remember these well girls; never date a picky/fastidious guy who can’t eat cream puffs without a plate! As for the boys, remember not to grow up into an adult who finds something wrong about eating something without a plate!
Sayaka: Looks like it didn’t work out, huh…
Madoka: Looks that way…
Kazuko: Okay.… Now I’d like to introduce a new transfer student today.
Sayaka: Wait, that’s what you were putting off/leaving to the last?
Kazuko: Now then, Akemi-san, welcome!
Sayaka: Whoa, a meganneko with pigtails… She looks so serious.
Kazuko: Okay, introduce yourself please.
Homura: Um… I’m… Akemi Homura… Um… It’s nice to meet you all…
Kazuko: Akemi-san was hospitalized for a long time because of her heart disease. Since she hasn’t been to school for a long while, she might need your help every now and then. Please help her out!
Girl: Akemi-san, which school did you go before?
Girl 2: Were you in any clubs? A sports one? Or an art one?
Girl 3: Your hairs is so long! Isn’t tough to comb it every morning?
Homura: Um… I… Umm
Madoka: Akemi-san! You have to go to the nurse’s office, right? Do you know where it is?
Homura: Huh… N-no…
Madoka: Then let me show you! I’m the health representative for this class!
Madoka: Sorry about that. They’re all nice people, it’s just that transfer students are so rare they get carried away.
Homura: No, I… Thank you.
Madoka: You don’t have to be so nervous! We’re classmates. I’m Kaname Madoka. Just call me Madoka.
Homura: Um… that’s…
Madoka: It’s okay. Is it okay if I call you Homura-chan?
Homura: Um… People don’t usually… call me by my first name. And it’s such a weird name too.
Madoka: What? No way! It sounds, I dunno, like a flame flaring up to me, it’s so cool!
Homura: I don’t really live up to my name…
Madoka: It’s such a waste though! You have such a great name, all you have to do is act cool to match it! Hey don’t you think this hallway is neat/cool? If feels like you’re walking through the sky.
Homura: That little black cat (kuroneko-chan)… I wonder if it’s there waiting for me?
Madoka: Homura-chan? Oh Amy!
Homura: Oh, so you know that little cat?
Madoka: Yes, a little. Do you too, Homura-chan?
Homura: Yes. This morning, on my way to school…
Madoka: Is that so? Homura-chan, do you like cats?
Homura: I like that very much.
Madoka: Me too! My favourite thing about cats is when they sharpen their claws.
Homura: Their claws?
Madoka: Yes, the way they swing their tails up high as they make that crunching/scratching sound… It’s super cute! (bad translation)
Homura: *giggle* I know what you mean. They’re cute, aren’t they?
Madoka: All right, I finally found something in common with Homura-chan.
Teacher: Okay, who wants give this problem a try? Okay you, Akemi-san
Homura: Y-yes… What do I do…? I don’t understand this at all…!
Teacher: What’s wrong?... Ah, you’ve been absent for a long time, right? Please borrow the notes from your friends.
Homura: Yes sir. I’m sorry…
Girl: She looked so smart and all because of her glasses though.
Girl 2: You’d think someone who was stuck at the hospital would have some time to study a little.
Girl 3: I bet she was just skipping school.
Teacher: Okay, that’s it for today.
Student: Stand!... Bow!…
Madoka: Homura-chan? Homura-chan?
Homura: Huh?
Madoka: Cheer up Homura-chan. You’re not the only one who can’t understand math.
Homura: Huh?
Madoka: I come to school every day, and attending my classes but even then, I’m still not too good at math.
Homura: Is that so?
Madoka: So don’t worry about it.
Sayaka: Hey Madoka, you can’t just say that. (bad translation) Akemi-san looks so confused/lost/worried.
Madoka: Yeah…
Sayaka: What?
Homura: Oh, it’s nothing. Um…
Sayaka: And so, here’s the notes!
Homura: Um… er, thank you very much. Wow, this is written in a very easy to understand way.
Sayaka: Heh, isn’t it? Isn’t it?
Madoka: That’s so great Homura-chan.
Homura: Hm…
Sayaka: Heh heh.
Homura: Miki-san’s handwriting very nice and clean. It feels very classy/proper.
Sayaka: Yeah, that’s because those notes aren’t mine.
Homura: Huh?
Madoka: Ack, these are Hitomi-chan’s notes! Did she lend them to you?
Sayaka: Oh sure, if you ask her, I’m sure she’d be happy to lend them to you.
Madoka: So you just took it? Are you sure it’s all right to?
Sayaka: You know, if there’s a classmate that really needs help, it’s the duty of the smart/scholarly to help them out. A single notebook can help the two of us so much, I’m sure Hitomi won’t get mad about it.
Homura: The two of us…?
Sayaka: Me, of course. Lately I can’t understand anything in the math classes…
Madoka: Oh Sayaka-chan, you’re way too easy going… (Bad translation)
Sayaka: Oh, tell me then Madoka… You sure you don’t want to have a look?
Madoka: I won’t look… My mama told me it’s bad to do stuff like that.
Sayaka: Oh ho, hm… so you’re okay with not looking at it then?
Madoka: I, I’m fine…
Sayaka: Really, you’re going to regret it.
Hitomi: Sayaka-san.
Sayaka: Ack… Hitomi…
Hitomi: You don’t have to just look at my notes. If you asked, I would have been happy to help you.
Sayaka: Yeah, you would. Ah hahaha.
Hitomi: Let’s have a study session together next time. And of course, Akemi-san is more than welcome to come with us.
Homura: Oh, thank you very much.
Madoka: Oh, then, I’ll come too! Please…
Hitomi: Okay, let’s do our best together.
Girls: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight… Ah…
Teacher: Today we’re going to do the running high jump: forward jump, scissor jump, belly roll, Fosbury-back flop. (note: this section was a pain, seriously there are techniques for high jump?) Try them all out, okay?
Girls: Yes…
Teacher: Akemi-san, are you all right? You look terrible, could it be anaemia/exhaustion?
Homura: Um, er…
Girl 1: Seriously, tiring out from the warm-up? It must be tough…
Girl 2: Well, she did have to stay in bed for half a year… it’s kinda expected.
Homura: Um, sensei, I’m… I’m fine.
Teacher: But, you look very sick.
Homura: But… but…
Madoka: Homura-chan!
Teacher: I know you want to participate but you shouldn’t push yourself so hard. You can just observe today. Okay?
Homura: I’m sorry…
Madoka: Sensei, I’ll stay with her.
Sayaka: Miki Sayaka, taking a jump!
Madoka: Are you all right Homura-chan?
Sayaka: *uwah… oops, hahahaha*
Homura: I am… the worst…
Madoka: Huh?
Homura: On the very first day of school, I can’t understand what’s being taught or even participate in gym.
Madoka: It can’t be helped, it’s your first day.
Homura: It’s going to be the same tomorrow too. I’m so worthless, I just cause trouble to everyone around me and can’t help anyone. All I can do is just live/exist… today, tomorrow… forever…
Madoka: Homura-chan, that’s not true. Believe in yourself, if you do your best I’m sure something will change.
Homura: I… I’m not strong like Kaname-san…
Madoka: Homura-chan…
Homura: No, it doesn’t matter if I become stronger… Rather… I want to be normal. I want to go to class normally, to do gym normally… to laugh like them…
Madoka: You will… You can do it Homura-chan, it’s just that your timing was bad. Give me your hand for a sec. Imagine yourself flying…
Homura: Okay.
Madoka: Heh, you saw yourself flying, didn’t you?
Homura: Yes… Kaname-san, all of a sudden my body feels so much lighter.
Madoka: You look better too.
Homura: Do you think I can return to class?
Madoka: Of course, let’s go!
Homura: Yeah…
Madoka: Kaname Madoka, taking a jump!
Teacher: Kaname-san, you just cleared one meter and fifty five centimetres!
Girls: Amazing! To be able to jump 1 m 55 cm in one go! Everyone’s going to want her on Sports Day/Fest!
Homura: That was amazing Kaname-san.
Madoka: Um, well, sort of. Next jump is Homura-chan.
Homura: Um, yes… Akemi Homura, taking a jump!
Teacher: Akemi-san… also cleared it?
Girls: WHOA!
Girl 1: Amazing! Amazing!
Girl 2: Could it be that Akemi-san is actually an amazing athlete?
Girl 3: Hey, hey Akemi-san, take another jump!
Homura: Um… er…
Madoka: Go for it, Homura-chan!
Homura: O-okay! Akemi Homura, second attempt, here I go! Huh?
Madoka: Homura-chan, where are you going?
Homura: I-I don’t know!! My legs… I can’t stop them! H-help me!! Kaname-san!!
Madoka: Homura-chan, wait for me!
Madoka: Mami-san! Mami-san!
Mami: What’s wrong, Kaname-san?
Madoka: Can you see the track field from your classroom?
Mami: I can see it… Huh, what is that sandstorm? Is it a witch?
Madoka: No, I used my magic on a friend but its gone berserk.
Mami: Why did you use magic during class?
Madoka: I’ll explain latter, so please cast the magic to stop my friend!
Mami: Oh for… Once I put her to sleep, let’s carry her to the nurse’s office. She’s going to fall/trip, but make sure that she doesn’t get any injuries okay.
Madoka: Y-yes.
Mami: Okay then, here we go. Let’s make sure to get the timing down right.
Homura: *crying* Huh? What? How? Why?
Madoka: Homura-chan? Homura-chan?! Homura-chan!
Izabel: I found you. I found you. A bothersome girl. I found you.
Teacher: Ah, you’ve been absent for a long time, right? Please borrow the notes from your friends.
Girl: She looked so smart and all because of her glasses though.
Girl 2: You’d think someone who was stuck at the hospital would have some time to study a little.
Girl 3: I bet she was just skipping school.
Homura: No, I really was sick! I wanted to go to school but… but…
Izabel: An embarrassing girl. I found you.
Girl 1: Seriously, passing out from the warm-up? It must be tough…
Girl 2: Well, she did have to stay in bed for half a year… it’s kinda expected.
Homura: You’re wrong!
Mami: It’s wrong to think that magic can do anything and everything. And the magic you just used, it’s dimmed/weakened your gem and could have come in handy in the future. It’s not as if there are an infinite number of grief seeds out there either, so please try not to use it in such a frivolous manner.
Madoka: I… I just wanted to help her a little.
Mami: I understand your feelings, but there must have been a different way. Don’t forget, magic should always be a last resort.
Madoka: Sorry.
Homura: Ma… gic?
Madoka: Oh, Homura-chan.
Homura: Kaname-san… This place…
Madoka: It’s the nurse’s office, um, lots of things happened during gym.
Homura: Happenings? Oh, that’s right… I was a bother again to everyone.
Izabel: Truly, a bothersome girl.
Madoka: No, that’s not true Homura-chan. You see I just…
Homura: I’m sorry… Thank for everything today.
Madoka: Ah… Homura-chan
Mami: Kaname-san, why don’t you leave her be today. Your straight forward and earnest manner/personality is wonderful but it might not hurt to take things a more slowly.
Madoka: Mami-san…
Mami: Even if you don’t use magic, I’m sure you’ll find a way to become true friends with her.
Madoka: Ah, our soul gems are detecting something.
Kyubey: A witch is searching out her prey.
Madoka: Ah, Kyubey.
Kyubey: There might be movement around this area.
Mami: Let’s search the area.
Madoka: Yes.
Homura: *sigh* What should I do?
Madoka: All you have to do is act cool to match it!
Homura: That’s impossible… I can’t do anything. I only cause trouble to others… Why? Will I stay like this forever?
Izabel: Then it’d be better if you just died now, wouldn’t it?
Homura: It might be better if I just died…
Izabel: Yeah! You should just die!
Homura: If I just died… Wha- What is this place?
Kyubey: I can hear the movement/presence of the witch. It seems that it’s completely awake.
Madoka: The soul gem is reacting strongly.
Mami: The witch is close by. Where’s the barrier?
Madoka: Ah, Mami-san! Over there!
Mami: That’s…
Kyubey: That’s a witch’s barrier. I can smell a human inside!
Homura: What? What’s going on?! No! What’s…
Mami: That was a close call.
Madoka: Everything’s fine now, Homura-chan!
Homura: You’re…
Kyubey: They are Puella Magi/Magical Girls. They hunt witches.
Madoka: Now you know our secret… But don’t the others in class!
Homura: A- amazing.
Madoka: We did it, Mami-san!
Mami: Yes we did. You’ve gotten a lot better too Kaname-san.
Madoka: Tee hee, thank you very much. Homura-chan, are you all right? You’re not injured are you? Homura-chan?
Homura: Yes… Yes, I’m all right.
Madoka: I’m so glad, I’m so glad Homura-chan.
Homura: So you live alone Tomoe-san?
Mami: Yes. So make yourself at home, okay.
Homura: Yes, thank you.
Madoka: What about you Homura-chan, won’t the people at home worry?
Homura: My home/family… is fine with it.
Madoka: Then I’m glad.
Homura: So Kaname-san, you’re fighting things like that all the time?
Madoka: Not really all the time… Mami is the veteran but I just made the contract with Kyubey last week.
Mami: But in today’s fight you were much better than earlier, Kaname-san!
Madoka: Tee hee
Homura: Are okay with it? Aren’t you afraid?
Madoka: It’s never really okay for me, and of course I’m afraid… But defeating a witch saves a lot of people, so its kind worth it right?
Mami: We’ve got to make sure Kaname-san’s a pro before Walpurgis Night arrives.
Homura: Walpurgis Night?
Mami: Hm, how do I say, it’s a sort of festival of the magic world?
Madoka: In any case, on a day with a powerful storm, make sure you don’t go outside.
Mami: Leaving that side, Kaname-san, don’t you have something to say to Akemi-san?
Madoka: Yes.
Homura: Huh.
Madoka: Um, you see Homura-chan, it’s about today’s gym class. Um, everything that happened is because I used some magic on Homura-chan.
Homura: I see…
Madoka: Yea, I’m really sorry. You were so depressed, so I thought I’d cheer you up with some magic. It didn’t really work.
Homura: … Thank you, Kaname-san…
Madoka: Huh?
Homura: When my legs wouldn’t stop moving, I worried ‘what should I do’ but when I was able to do the high jump, I was so happy. So… thank you.
Madoka: Homura-chan…

Madoka: Yeah, that’s right. Why don’t you become a magical girl too, Homura-chan?
Homura: Huh? Can you really become one so easily?
Madoka: She can, right Kyubey?
Kyubey: Well to put it simply, I grant the wishes of humans in exchange for a contract where for you to work as Magical Girls for me. If you say, that’s simple, then I suppose it is.
Mami: It’s not that simple. Becoming a Magical Girl means giving up any possibility of living a normal life. It means bearing the duty of hunting down witches. And no one knows when the battle will ever end. Not to mention it’s extremely dangerous, if you become a Magical Girl half heartedly, all you’ll do is regret it.
Homura: I… see…
Mami: It’s getting late/Let’s call it a night… It’s getting late now.
Madoka: Yes, thank you for the meal.
Homura: Thank you very much.
Madoka: Homura-chan, about what we were talking about before.
Homura: What we were talking about?
Madoka: When I said “why don’t you become a Magical Girl too”.
Homura: Oh that.
Madoka: Um, I didn’t mean to say it so lightly/flippantly.
Homura: Huh?
Madoka: You said it yourself Homura-chan,
Homura: “I’m no use to anyone, I just cause trouble to everyone around me and can’t help anyone. All I can do is just live/exist…” I know exactly how that feels. I felt that way too for the longest time. But, when I became a Magical Girl and began to fight Witches, I began to feel better about myself (alt trans: gain more confidence in myself). I’ve made a lot of mistakes and bothered Mami-san a lot too but I thought to myself, even someone like me can defeat witches and help someone. I was so happy, that’s why I thought maybe Homura-chan should become a Magical Girl too?
Homura: Kaname-san…
Madoka: But what Mami-san said is true too. So if Homura-chan really wants to become a Magical Girl, then make sure you think really hard about your wish and what your future will be.
Homura: Yes. I promise you, I won’t become a Magical Girl without a firm reason.
Madoka: Thank you…
Amy: *meow*
Madoka: Oh, Amy!
Amy: *meow*
Homura: Good evening. She’s really fond of you, Kaname-san.
Madoka: Yea, um actually, I saw her get hit/run over by a car right in front of me.
Homura: Huh?
Madoka: Ever since then, we’ve been friends.
Homura: Um, could it be…
Madoka: Yeah, to save her, I became a Magical Girl.
Amy: *meow*
Madoka: I wanted to take her home with me, but she likes being outside. We see each other in town a lot, don’t we?
Amy: *meow* *meow*
Madoka: If I told Mami-san, ‘I became a Magical Girl to save a cat’, I’m sure she’ll get really upset and scold me.
Homura: I don’t think she would. I’m sure she would understand Kaname-san’s wonderful kindness and think it pretty cool.
Amy: *meow*
Madoka: Thank you, Homura-chan. Amy. If… Now this is only if. If something happens to me, could you take care of Amy for me?
Homura: Kaname-san?
Madoka: It’s not that something is going to happen to me, it’s just that. You know, Mami-san said it, we don’t know what will happen when we fight witches. And sometimes, I feel really insecure/worried about it. So I wanted to have a friend who knows my secret like Homura-chan to listen to me.
Homura: Kaname-san…
Madoka: Sorry for making you listen to such a weird conservation.
Homura: Um, no, not at all. I’m very happy that you wanted to share something this important with me.
Amy: *meow*
Madoka: Wow, it’s not often I’ve seen Amy jump into someone else’s arms like that.
Homura: R-really? Hee hee, that tickles.
Madoka: It’s so wonderful Amy that you made a new friend.
Amy: *meow*
Madoka: Homura-chan, thanks for staying with me tonight.
Homura: No, not at all. It was fun for me too.
Madoka: Then, see you later.
Homura: Yes, see you tomorrow.
Homura: What a storm. I wonder if Amy’s okay. That reminds me, Kaname-san didn’t come to school today.
Madoka: ‘In any case, on a day with a powerful storm, make sure you don’t go outside.’
Homura: Could it… today? Wa-lp-ur-gi-s N-ig-ht… Walpurgis Night is… a festival commonly celebrated throughout Europe. In Germany… In Germany, the Walpurgisnacht is also called/known as the Hexen Nacht, which means “Witch Night”. During the night, witches begin a feast/festival… A witch’s feast… Magical Girls fight witches… if that’s the case, a night where witches gather means… It couldn’t be, the battle tonight…
Homura: Where… Where are you, Kaname-san?
Amy: *meow*
Homura: Ah! Amy!
Amy: *meow*
Homura: You’ll show me the way?
Amy: *meow*
Homura: Amy, take me to where Kaname-san is!
Amy: *meow*
Homura: That night… I became a Magical Girl… To save Kaname Madoka… But… Back then, I knew nothing… I still believed that if you become a Magical Girl, you could change everything… That when tomorrow came, we would see each other with smiles…

Amy: *meow*
Homura: That night… I became a Magical Girl… To save Kaname Madoka… But… Back then, I knew nothing… I still believed that if you become a Magical Girl, you could change everything… That when tomorrow came, we would see each other with smiles…
thanks dude. i just finished listening the drama cd. and after listening to madoka's character song, i wonder if the song is from homu-chan's perspective as well.
homu said "mata ashita" before parting ways with madoka and seemed to fit in the lyrics 100%
Erm, do we have to suspect every song of Homura's perspective present? If Mata Ashita is from her perspective, I don't see how it can be called MADOKA's character song in the first place...
Anyway, thanks a lot for the translation! Being able to know everything said in a cd drama is an incredible luxury for me. Actually, that's the first time I read such a translation.
Not only that, but someone took Nagumo's translation and subbed the drama CD already. If you've been torrenting the series, you'll know where to find it...

that's the fun part i don't know if i'll call this series an expert in trolling or misdirection. whatever the case maybe, the staff had pulled out some "pranks" in the expense of the audience in the past. another one will definitely not hurt
now, i'll eagerly await homu-chan's character song. i'm sure it's full of (romantic) love for madoka. but i expect that as unbroadcasted ep 10/11 ed song. mami's, saya's, and kyouko's char songs will be a lot sooner
regarding the drama cd, a couple of folks uploaded already in youtube for those who don't want to use torrent files. maybe someone will make a custom animation as well
