I remember reading these chapters and wondering how Shaft would handle the seriousness of the situation. The blend of comedy and non-comedy (seriousness) was great.

This was rather unexpected. How can I explain it? Whenever I watch Arakawa, I just expect some non-nonsensical comedy with some intrinsic meaning attached to it, but this episode was rather serious. Sure, there was some comedy on it at the beginning, but in general, the development always went on a serious direction, starting with Ric's finding out some secret Nino didn't expect him to find, and her losing her cool for once.

Ric's feelings for Nino have been rather consistent throughout the entire series (i.e. season 1, plus what we've had of this second season). However, this episode showed how serious he is about her, and how much he actually cares and feels about her. Not only that, but Nino's fear of the possibility of Ric leaving her was an interesting thing to see. Sure, we've seen she really loves him back, but we've never seen how serious she was about him.

I've got to admit I wanted an episode like this last season. We got a date and some nice interaction, but other characters had to be introduced and the screen-time had to be divided, so that most of them would get a decent share. Of course, I'm, by no means, complaining about it, since that's one of the things that made the first season some bloody entertaining, but that did reduce the amount of screen-time Ric and Nino had together, along with their development. So, despite the development they had in the first season, their actual relationship, despite it being rather clear they were serious about each other, was, in my opinion, rather bland. However, this episode did go to some lengths to show the extent of their feelings.

Hopefully, this won't be the last of these type of episodes. Sure, I love comedy, and I definitely don't want it to disappear. Very few animes make me laugh remotely as much as Arakawa - without relying to black humour - and thus, I want it to remain being a comedy, but I'd really like them to keep Nino's and Ric's development throughout the series, along with their relationship. Of course, I want to see development for the other characters as well. I hope there can be a balance between the comedy and these sort of episodes.

I seriously did not expect such a serious focus on the relationship between Ric and Nino when going into this weeks episode, not at all. It's really good though, i mean for all the serious content we've been seeing during the opening scenes of each episode, it's good that something that can rival them has made it into the shows story. I was perfectly fine with this series just being an all out straight comedy, because i love it for that, though i can't begin to express how happy i am that there's such a hidden side to the series.

I'll admit that i was expecting Hoshi to have tapped over the content, mainly because of how the jokes are usually played out in this show, and that i was expecting them to have something to do with him right from the start. Seriously wouldn't knowing the true contents of the tape though, especially seeing as though Chief seems to what's on the tape, and believes it's to early for Ric to hear. Such a tease.

The topic regarding Ric and Nino's relationship always seems like a none serious one until this episode, i mean it's been shown how much Ric wants to devote himself to make this relationship work, though Nino has just been her typical self, which i'd call hiding away. This episode was one of the rare chances that we were able to see her true self. I knew we'd see it eventually, though never did i expect in this fashion. I have a feeling it'll be a while before we see it again, though i'm thankfully for such a chance in the adaptation.

Will finish off by saying how much i adored the music placement for the final scene. Hoping said piece will make it onto a soundtrack eventually.

Also can anyone reading the manga tell me which chapter this part of the story came from please?

Arakawa has 10 volume and it's still on-going. The amazon does appear briefly in the manga.

God this show is amazing.

I was laughing hysterically during Nino's fit on the telephone pole, but then the show slapped me across the face with some of the most heart warming, moving character development I've seen in fucking ages. I have been DIEING for a show like this since I started watching anime 15 years ago, this show just leaves me so fucking happy at the end each time.

I need more fucking words for amazing.

This episode makes me want to marathon the manga, but I already spent 4 hours yesterday catching up on Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai, which just made my backlog even longer if anything ... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHH *dies*

Nino is incredibly hilarious and cute as always, but I feel Ric's narrative and inner monologue really flesh out the emotion, and Kamiya's voice really ace the job once again. I totally didn't get the gag at the end but I lol'ed all the same.

I've been wondering, after this episode, do you think Ric's and Nino's relationship will be the same? Up until this point, Nino wasn't entirely sure about Ric's feelings for her, and Ric wasn't entirely sure about Nino's feelings (her own insecurities included) either. However, now both of them are aware of those things.

Do you think they will continue the same as always, or do you expect a change in their behaviour (at the very least, when they are together)?

The running thread of the tape player had a sweet ending, but the episode was also packed with the absurdity that Arakawa provides. Kou's..."failures", the birds under Nino's command, and Hoshi recording over the tapes. Playing keep-away with the viewers, I see. The gag contest this week was also rather out there. On a last note, I am interested in that manga that Kou unknowingly read. Catgirl maids sounds like something that, even if I have seen it before, I would not mind seeing it again.
