Also whoever said Erin wasnt a female name is wrong, Erin is typically how you spell the it for a female name with Aaron being the male spelling
I don't think anyone said "Erin" isn't a girl's name, i think they were referring to "eren" or something...but yes, you are right, erin = girl, aaron = guy

*edit* LOL @ guy below, way to completely write the same exact thing i did

No one said Erin isn't a girl's name, however Eren is not a girl's name. I think they translated it too literally.

Well, the argument was with the game's translation, which was Elen, also not a true English name.

I don't see anything wrong with a Japanese name. I mean Zwei is Japanese after all.

Still better than Eren though, which clearly no girl uses that name.

Looks like some group is releasing them now with the name spelt Ellen, good for them.

Pardon me, but my issue is that some of us gameplayers are already got used to her being Elen. It is kinda like they don't care, what those players who already played the game think. (even though the sourcematerial is there in english, and it was translated officially with the approval of the original japanese creators)

Otherwise:
Quote:
Source
The girl name Elen. Meaning: Bright one, Shining one
Elen's origin is Old Greek. Elen is a variant form of the English name Helen.
Elen is an unusual baby girl name. It is not ranked within the top 1000. In 2008, out of the family of girl names directly linked to Elen, the English Helen was the most widely used.
Also please note: I couldn't find any information, where Elen is a boyname.
Quote:
source
The boy name Eren is pronounced EHRahN. Meaning: Saint.
Eren's origin, as well as its use, is in the Turkish language. Eren's meaning is 'saint'. Derived literally from the element eren.

Eren is a seldom used baby name for boys. It is not listed within the top 1000 names.
Again, couldn't find any information that Eren is a girl name.

And she isn't japanese at all, there should be some flexibility when translating her name, however translating it literally is not flexible IMHO.
Spoiler for spoilerish:

nice ep. They didn't have as many tender moments as I remember, but still interesting nonetheless. I can finally start calling Ein Elen. And yes, I'm using Elen because it looks/sounds better. Reiji looked pretty serious about killing SM, it should be entertaining as to how they are going to show how this ends.

The opening song(but not the animation) is the ONLY thing good about that dream. And I say dream because a OVA of Phantom that's THAT bad could never exist in reality .

I'll stick to the game and the natural romanization (which is also the proper way it's spoken AND an existing name): Elen.

Why, i wonder? SM did "almost" nothing to deserve Reiji' rage. He "just" erased his memories, enslaving him into a life of pain, murders and another hediond crimes, and took him to very far from his lovely family, forcing him to never meet them again. Ah, and did (and is doing!) God know what sick things to the girl he want to protect the most, Ein/Elen.

I liked this scene a little more in the game. Reiji was definitely in rage, hating everything Inferno did to him, and wanting to rip SM's stupid smile from his mouth with a knife.

I too, cannot wait for, what I hope to be, Scythe Master's demise. What he does with and to Elen is enough for me to hate every inch of his being.

I really can't stand when a girl is abused in any sort of way. It never used to bother me, but it does now. I don't know why either. lol.

I can't help it, but I liked Claudia's interaction with Zwei.

I don't understand the big issue with the name.

Her name is 江漣, not Elen or Eren. Whichever romanization you pick is purely arbitrary. Zwei is Japanese, I doubt he knew whether the names Elen or Eren already existed or whether they generally apply to men or women. He just invented something he liked.

Eren isn't unreasonable, and certainly not a mistake. The original game translators' choice of spelling was most likely just as arbitrary.

Shit , scythe , go die well he will . Reiji will kill him !!!
Next episode it seems that Eren will be happy and together with Reiji .
But The Inferno will purchase them . GO Kill the inferno and its done .

Zwei is not Japanese. It is German.. for the number two. Ein is one in German, as well. And Eren is usually a boy's name, but it does mean Saint in Turkish, so it does make some sense. Whether that was the reason the name was chosen, who knows.

First of all, I consider it unprofessional negligence not to try for consistency when there are already existing products on the market, and there are no errors to correct. But what's much more problematic is the fact that it's NOT merely a Japanese name. Eren is a _male_ name while Elen is a _female_ name. Heck, even the Japanese pronunciation is close to "Elen" - "Eren" sounds different.

In effect, it's seriously hampering the enjoyment of fans who know the source. And this is the exact opposite of what the translator/editor are paid to do.

Addition: This vexes me even more since the rest of the translation is really good, as far as I can tell. So absolutely unnecessary.
