Since no one has said it try watching Elfen Lied.

It probably will make you cry, but you have to get through all the boobies, bodies getting ripped apart, and blood spattering everywhere.
Its a super good anime.

What the regulars did not mention Saikano!? it's one of the best realistic and heart wrenching Animes. And oh, i second in motion, Voices of a Distant Star and 5cm Per Second.

To reiterate, I recommend:
ef ~ a tale of memories (hoping you get it.)
Kanon 2006
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
The Place Promised in our early Days
True Tears

Maybe 5 Centimeters per Second
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Voices of a Distant Star
if you don't mind a less-than-happy ending.

I would personally avoid Air and SaiKano though.
