This story just keeps getting more and more interesting. I'm really curious about Ai's existence, I feel that theres something very special about her and also the true reasoning as to why people stopped dying/can't give birth. I don't think his theory is all that right and I definitely don't think it's because they ran out of space in heaven and hell lol, that just sounds silly.
I feel that when Ai really leaves the village and experiences all sorts of screwed up horrible things, her heart will still remain pure in the end and hopefully it changes his perception about the world and how he sees himself. |

Just this episode? He was introduced to us in the first episode kicking a loli into the air. I guess you're referring to the "what are you going to do with your life?" scene. I'm more taken by the blatant child abuse in this show. For it not to be purely pornographic violence, there must be some rationale for it within the story.
Ai has taken quite a bit of physical abuse from Hampnie and shows no signs of wear and tear. An ordinary twelve-year-old girl's ribcage might have cracked in the first assault and untoward damage done to her internal organs. Other than the shock value of watching a little girl be abused, are we intended to conclude she is not human, or at least not human in some way similar to Hampnie? Hampnie hits Ai again in this episode. Other than rubbing the side of her face she appears largely uninjured. So why does he kick her so powerfully in the opening episode? Did he think she was already dead so kicking her wouldn't have mattered? Does he still think that now, even after the encounter with Scar? Does he think Ai really is a gravekeeper? Is this the "talkiest" show of the year so far? This episode in particular has a lot of exposition by Hampnie and Scar. It's a good thing Namikawa has talent. Even so I thought Hampnie was going on a bit too long at the campsite, and I like shows with lots of plot and exposition like this. It reminds me of Mouryou no Hako.

While Hampnie elaborated some on his reasoning behind killing Julie's wife, I'm still not clear on how being an undead lowers one's quality of life; Julie made it sound like the wife had a normal enough existence. I hope Hampnie had reasons beyond that "Ash should be ash, the dead should be dead" stuff. It makes sense for people in real life to accept death as a normal part of life because there's not much we can do about it (yet), but in a world where there's not much difference between being alive or being undead, clinging to those types of ideals seems like pointless moral sophistry. If you're alive enough to be sentient and happy, then I don't see any reason to go "welp, you're technically a zombie, back in the ground with you." |

Ep2 was completely involving. One of those episodes where the end comes sooner than I expect. Lots of questions, especially about Ai and Hampnie Hambart (so reminiscent of the name of the narrator in Nabokov's original novel Lolita, Humbert Humbert).
I liked how the episode flowed. Good pacing. Good look. The "child abuse" aspect never felt real to me. Just an aspect of the bizarreness of the show's world. Ai's confusion and will to live felt real, however. And so was Hampnie's inexplicable willingness to look after her. Maybe another seiyuu than Toyosaki Aki would have made her perilous situation feel real. But it didn't feel that real even in the manga, so perhaps not. Namikawa Daisuke facing off with Fujiwara Keiji? Good stuff.

Um...can someone explain to me why Ai's going with the person who murderized her entire village and tried to kill her once already? It seems kind of flawed that she would willingly go with him.
Oh, and Humpnie's spiel is kinda hypocritical. He just got 'killed' when Julie shot him, so by that logic he should just lay down and not do anything: 'Ashes to ashes, earth to earth' as he says. I get the feeling that he's killing people not because of ideals but because he's incapable of dying and considers it a curse, meaning he's killing anyone who he thinks should be dead in place of his own mortality because he craves death and the natural order. There was nothing stopping him from killing Julie, and yet because Julie was alive he probably saw it as reason enough not to kill him.

The loli abuse continues. However, Hampnie seems to be warming up to Ai already. He could have left her behind and run away on his own, instead he offered her a piggyback ride and explained to her a bit more about the world she lives in. He's incredibly rough and his methods are twisted but I think he wishes for her well-being.

Her village kept her in the dark for the longest time, and she only recently found out that she was living among zombies. The only way she is going to learn the truth is if she travels. |

She attempted to kill Humpnie for revenge, then mourned the villagers and had to bury over 40 different people one at a time on her own.
It's not like that could have happened in 10-20 minutes, even if that's how quickly the episode passed over those events. |

Very interesting episode, managed to raise the stake of this show even higher by telling us some shocking truths and facts about the world the characters live in.

As to why he keeps holding onto those ideals regardless of that messed up world, he already explained it at the end if episode 2. People won't stay fresh forever after dying, the decomposing process kicks in slowly and gradually, both in and outside without people noticing it, leaving behind nothing but a rotten corpse clinging to life. That's why he corrected Ai's begging while pointing the gun at her, rather than not wanting to die, she should want to live. |
