I just finished watching this series. Overall I can say this series suffered a cast too big to handle in the amount of episodes it had. The result character interactions that we saw are nothing short of gorgeous, however the large majority of the characters feel shallow for the most part. The series did benefit from having a set of very strong ending episodes (the last 5) but what cannot help but remember a lot of the, more trite episodes that preceded them.
Comparing it to K-On is inevitable given the somewhat similar nature of both series, and I think the later ends up being the better, at least for me, in large part because of the smaller size of the cast in K-ON that allowed it to have a more focused structure. Production values wise I have nothing to complain about in IdolM@ster, however in the overall balance I think Idolm@ster doesn't really manage to stand out. 7.5/10

Midonin's The Two iDOLM@STERs Comparison Diary
Week Twenty Four I've dealt on the themes of togetherness and loneliness between the two programs plenty, but there is another theme that I can explore. Friendship, Family and Love. iM@S emphasized friendship-as-family pretty heavily in the second half of episode 24, with a little help from Haruka's subconscious self. Love has never really been part of things, at least in that sense. Familial love certainly, but romantic love is a distant second in the grand scheme of the show's proceedings. Now, over in Xenoglossia, family has always been broken, and friendship shaky at best, especially with the revelation that Azusa is Chihaya's sister. (This is the only canon this holds true for, so keep that in mind.) Love has been at the forefront of the show since day one, even if the majority of it has been between girls and giant moon robots. In this case, unity doesn't mean working together, but becoming one with the aforementioned robots. Contrasting Chihaya and Haruka again. In iM@S, Chihaya is a force that helps everyone get back together, and Haruka's solitude is shown as something she needs, but that hopefully shouldn't persist for long. In Xenoglossia, Chihaya is a catalyst towards the grand finale of the series for almost everyone, and Haruka's solitude is almost refreshing - she's spending some quality time playing games with Imber after getting him back last week. Next week will be my final week of this before a long hiatus, whenever episode 26 of iM@S is released. |
