The trouble is, ever since the Year 2000 the fandom is LESS than accomodating towards leading ladies who are not sweet, cuddly and cute.

This is why Itou Miki, though famous and respected for playing the tough and butch Android 18 in Dragonball Z gave one last desperate bid for cuteness as Shigure Asa in Shuffle back in 2005 at ripe age of 43. She saw the change in the market, and tried to fight it.

And although Itou Miki's performace as Asa Sempai IS touching, sincere and yes, even cute, you could TELL that she was straining hard to achieve the cheerful perkiness that comes so natural to her fellow Seiyuu who have been doing cute roles all their lives.

Notice how she IMMEDIATELY retired to playing coarse, butch and NON-cute roles like middle aged mothers and Fujimura Taiga (Fate Stay Night) straight afterwards, and never tried to do "cute" ever again. That is why a luminary like her has faded into obscuirty in the present day.

Horie Yui is either (1) savoring her ability to have a huge and devoted fanbase of cute lovers while she still can or/and (2) building a fanbase so loyal and huge that they won't CARE that she is getting old by the time she is.

Besides, cute can also be strong. Just look at Horie Yui's performances as the intelligent and mature yet loving, maternal and quirky Raika-oneechan from Papa No Iu Koto Wo Kikinasia.
