(L) The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (Novels 10/11) Spoiler Discussion

One thing going for a possible Surprise movie(s?) is that it, too, marks a significant milestone in the overall Haruhi storyline. In which, like Disappearance, Kyon makes a major decision that's related to which chick he'd be with and the fate of the world (which are not mutually exclusive). A scene in there would make Haruhi-shippers celebrate with vuvuzela while shake the Yuki-shippers (like me) to their cores. Would make a great scene, just saying.

When there's a buck, there's a way - as Capitalism would say. Of the many ways to skin this Surprise cat to size, one is to avoid the confusing switches between the alpha and beta lines altogether. Put the alpha line on TV, and make beta the movie. Would make a great cliff-hanger and movie hook on TV when, you know, Kyon sees the indisputable proof of the divergent world.

I doubt Dissociation + Surprise will even fit in a 14 episode run, let alone a movie of sensible length. If they decide to cut a whole timeline the story will not make sense and I doubt there's much actual content to cut out in each of the timelines without making the fans mad.

All in all I'm against a movie and more for a TV series. Episodic content is more suitable for Dissociation + Surprise. Unless Kadokawa wants to do a publicity stunt again (3 movies, alpha, beta and a 15 minute one for ending ) like they did with Endless Eight, then I'll say: "Surprise us Kadokawa!"

I have a few questions regarding the new character:

My first concern is that Yasumi might become a walking dues ex machina. Has it been confirmed whether or not she has all of Haruhi's powers? Nagato herself was already treading dangerously close to deus ex machina territory as it was.

Another thought I had in regards to Yasumi was how she would interact with Kyon. Since she's the personification of Haruhi's subconscious, does that mean that she's also in love with Kyon? Would she also try for his heart? If not, would she be an in-universe shipper of Haruhi and Kyon (I'm hoping this is the case)?

What do you guys think?

She pretty much is the Deus Ex Machina (literally) for the story. Also, since Yasumi is (apparently) to Haruhi as, say, Jesus is to the God of the Christians (i.e. pretty much one in the same . . . if I read the translated segment correctly, she responds to Alpha-Kyon and Beta-Kyon with, what is essentially, 'I AM THAT I AM' when asked who she is) wouldn't that mean that Yasumi competing with Haruhi for Kyon's attention essentially be Haruhi competing with herself?

After browsing through the novel and skipping a ton of details. I got quite some questions.

As asked by someone else earlier in this thread, what is the near death encounter with Kuyoh and Asakura about? I don't think the novel gave a nice explanation of why it happened and its consequence seem to be obscure, too.

Why did Fujiwara hold so much sway on Kuyoh? She is almost literally under his control. It is hard to explain it just by saying they have the same interest.

Why did Sasaki's closed space appear on Kyon's high school? It seems to just appeared there for no reason.

So what if, if Haruhi doesn't display any kind of power while Yasumi is detached, Yasumi is the incarnation of Haruhi's powers itself, fully aware of what it's doing?

I have to admit, Rainy Day reminded me a lot of Someday in the Rain. It's a nice little side story that gave us some insight into how Kyon started using his "yare yare" phrase.

It was very interesting to see some of the interaction between Kyon and Sasaki when they were in middle school. Kunikida really surprised me though. He seems much more reserved in high school compared to how he acts here.

It'll be a nice little prelude to a season full of Dissociation/Surprise.

I'm only skimming it right now, but to summarize, at that part Kyon (along with Fujiwara, Kuyou, Kyouko, Itsuki, and Mikuru (big)) is in a Closed Space version of the clubroom that's actually a fusion of Haruhi and Sasaki's Closed Space. As Fujiwara's in the midst of trying to kill Haruhi to use her power for his time crime, Kyon leaps out the clubroom window and grabs her as she's floating unconscious in the sky of the Closed Space. Then a Celestial appears and saves them from falling...then Kyon has a vision of him and Haruhi in college, then the next thing he knows he's in her room a month in the future, the first year anniversary of the SOS Brigade ...yeah, that's about where I am now and I'm kinda confused but I assume things will be explained by the end XD

But yeah, lots of HaruhixKyon goodness in that scene~

I believe this also marks the first time that we the audience (and possibly Kyon as well) have seen Itsuki meeting Mikuru(Big). AFAIK Kyon has told Itsuki about meeting her (such as in the prologue to "Intrigues" where the two are discussing the time-twisting nature of what happened in "Disappearance"), but Itsuki has never actually encountered Mikuru(Big) in person.
