So I'm seeing a lot of anime clips on youtube being removed... due to Sony Music copyright claims. I can understand the clips with music/songs in them since I think Sony does own most of the music in Japan.

What I don't understand is how they can claim copyright on clips that don't even have background music, let alone any songs. If it was a company that owns the IP on the LN/manga like Kadokawa I can understand (the ones that I uploaded and blocked by Kadokawa are only blocked in Japan) but Sony Music!?

I'm sure these people who implement copyright laws do not know what a derivative work is.

One thing that i can't never understand is the removal of PV from youtube.
As i know, PV stands for Promotional Video.
So, if many people promote your song through PV, isnt it a good thing?
Why bother to remove all the PV, yet on the official channel no official PV is uploaded?

You'd think the maxim "any word of mouth is good" would penetrate their thick brainless craniums... but they're so insistent that they control the entire message that they'd be reaching into your brain and snatching out thoughts if they could. They border on insanity at times (like when the corporates that controlled Star Trek tried to shut down every fan website in existence... you know, the ones that actually were dominant players in resurrecting the franchise - that went down like a drugged brick).

Often promotional videos are released through selected websites that have advertising or communicate the PV in an approved setting (aka one where people can't comment underneath like in Youtube). Youtube hasn't paid them slush to air it. All kinds of little greasy money flow that they worry about instead of "yay, our product is getting buzz!!!"

I really find it difficult to be nice about it because, frankly, it makes *terrible* business sense to alienate your customers the way the industry has evolved towards. Only in "upside-down" Dimension.. .which apparently we slipped into about 20 years ago.

And its endemic to the entire entertainment industry, of which 'japan, inc.' is only part of.

Japanese companies have typically strived to maintain strong control over PR, marketing, and copyrights. It's also why you won't find screen captures of anything on many Japanese sites and blogs (which can be readily scrutinized by a company's legal department).
