North Korea to launch long-range rocket in December

Quote:
North Korea is to launch a long-range rocket between 10 and 22 December, its official news agency says.

The KCNA agency said the aim was to launch a satellite.

Previous - unsuccessful - launches have been criticised as breaches of a UN ban on North Korean ballistic missile tests.

A road tunnel partially collapsed in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, trapping some vehicles inside.

USS Enterprise retires from the Fleet.

http://blogs.defensenews.com/interce...name-lives-on/

Quote:
The mighty USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, began its deactivation Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 at Norfolk naval base in Virginia. These images mark the ship’s crew disembarking the ship for the last time.

Although formal decommissioning won’t take place until 2016 — after the ship’s eight nuclear reactors are inactivated — the ENTERPRISE will never again go to sea under her own power.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, in a video played towards the end of the ceremony, announced that CVN 80, third ship of the new GERALD R. FORD-class carriers, will be named ENTERPRISE, thus becoming the ninth American naval ship to bear the name.

Under current construction schedules, the new ENTERPRISE won’t enter service until 2025, replacing the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69). See the bottom of this post for a peek at what’s to come.

I guess it's a natural fit for the US Navy to have a carrier named Enterprise among the next generation carriers. When I was a kid, the CVN-65 was my favorite when reading those books for 12-year-olds about super technology advancements.

We have yet to see a future USS William Clinton, but that will probably not be before some time.

I'm not fond of naming the ships after human beings. I wish they'd go back to the sailing ship era names - Intrepid, Enterprise, Constitution, etc.

Considering what the military thinks of him, I don't see that happening within his lifetime.

Of course the Ford-class will have two presidents and a famous ship to its list at this point. (USS GERALD R. FORD (CVN-78), USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CVN-79), and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-80). Add this to the ten Nimitz-class carriers, and you have one ship not named after a person, and four not named after Presidents of the United States. (USS NIMITZ (CVN-68), USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70), USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74), and the future USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-80)).
