One sunny day, Kyuukai arrived at the store where he gets all his kemonomimi needs. The owner greeted him with a smile. After all, he was a regular. He spotted Neko-Aria, sitting on a shelf, staring with a far off look into space with a smile gracing her face. Setting down his unholy amount of kemonomimi products, he walked over to her. And he picked her up like a father would to his daughter.

At that moment, a spark lit in his brain. A thought, that one day, he'd love to be a father for a girl like this. That thought just flowed through him, it felt natural, almost part of his soul. He was so captivated by the thought and the "girl" in his hands, that he stood there for minutes on end. The owner of the store noticed him, and for thanks for all of Kyuukai's patronage, he allowed Kyuukai to take the girl as a gift.

And on that day, Kyuukai took her home.

And on that day, he moved out of his old dorm room to an empty one, leaving Laura and Canan, to have some privacy for once. Settling the "girl" down on the bed, looking her over. He patted her head, a fond smile on his face. She wasn't really a plushie, per se, she was more like a doll. The maker, the shop's owner, put so much work into her. She was made of some sort of material that was just like a humans flesh, but softer, more artificial. If Kyuukai hadn't taken her from a shop that morning, he would have thought the "girl" before him was a human. And he would have arrested the shop owner. But he hadn't, and he did appreciate his assistance and discretion regarding his patronage. It was also nice having someone else to talk about kemonomimis with.

She was a cute girl, absolutely adorable in his eyes.

So he held her up like one would a daughter again. Something just clicked with him. Affection? Yes. That kind of affection? No.

Another idea clicked in his head. Would he be a good father? He set the girl down, deep in thought. If he became a father, he'd have to give up so much, to gain so much.

This sparked his first step towards his decision to move on. He noticed the girl looked a little like him. She had his eyes. She had the shape of his hands, even though they were frail, and tiny.

If this girl was his daughter, he thought he'd love her with all his heart. If this girl was his daughter, maybe something in the world would be different.

Drinking away his sorrows in privacy that night, he became drunk out of his mind. He began seeing things, experiencing things. On that night, the plushie, more like the doll, came to life.

She called him Daddy, and told him about her day. She told him she loved him, and that she was forever his little girl.

He woke up the next morning, to find the girl wrapped in his arms, and his pillow stained with tears. He remembered that dream clearly, relishing every feeling. In the future, he wanted to become a father.

But in a tiny, almost locked off segment of his mind, he considered himself the father of the "girl" in his arms. He couldn't keep thinking of her as just "a girl". As proof of his newfound attachment, he gave her a name.

And so, this marked the first day of the bond between Kyuukai Tokiwa, and his "daughter", Koneko Illustria Tokiwa. His KIT.

~~~ (Story passes along like normal for the next 3 months)

Kyuukai sits at his workbench, staring down at the cybernetic skeleton. He slipped it into his "daughter's" body, closing up the incision with industrial strength spray on bandaid. He feared FRACTURE would crack down on him for foolishly "wasting" an IS core on a worthless project. This project was nowhere near useless to him.

He would bring Koneko Illustria Tokiwa to life. He would raise his daughter for real. And so, with a defibrillator, he jumpstarted his daughter's heart. Her chest lurched, as if alive. And then he waited.

But she didn't open her eyes.

He patted Koneko on the head sighing, and so, with tears in his eyes, he waited by her side.

And waited.

And waited.

Laura sees his fixation on his daughter to be unhealthy, unnatural. Canan thinks it to be heartwarming, fluffy at best. Chifuyu thinks she needs to hire a better shrink.

But Tabane sees what her son is going through.

He sat there by his "daughter's" side for 5 days, everything he needed to live only in arms reach. He sat there, just murmuring heartwarming words, and wholeheartedly prayed to a God he halfheartedly believed in.

Laura thought they should just knock him out and send him to a hospital. Canan thinks along with her. Chifuyu thinks he needs to get over himself and his dreams.

Tabane still hopes for the best. And Maya Yamada comes to visit him.

And on midnight, on the fifth day, something happened. Kyuukai Tokiwa held his daughter's hand, and stood up. He closed her deadened eyes with a sweep of his hands, and with a kiss on her forehead, walked away.

And a small hand grasped for her father.

He turned back quickly, speeding to his daughters side, screaming for someone to come and see.

(Irish, Laura, or Chifuyu show up*)

There was a twitch. Then a breath. Then a grumble. And finally, Koneko Illustria Tokiwa opened her eyes to a new world.

And for the first time in her life, she stood up. For the first time in her life, she looked at the world. And for the first time in her life, she looked her father in the eye.

And she launched herself at him, grappling him in a hug. And her first words were...

"I love you, Daddy!"

The happiest day in his current life.

Koneko lives with Kyuukai and Laura now. She, along with Canan, think of Laura as a mother. Canan sees Koneko like a sister, Koneko sees Laura and Kyuukai as her parents. And she loves to be around her father. She eats for fuel, dispenses waste like a normal girl would, and is as waterproof as any girl is.

She loves Irish as an uncle. (If she's included in Shadow.)

Her sudden appearance in the academy is shady, but she's treated awkwardly by the student population. Tabane's all eccentric and happy, due to finally having a grandchild.

Koneko is at odds with Koyomi for some reason.

She doesn't like Tatenashi.

Is loved by the children of the orphanage.

(More about her will be brushed up later.)

But everyone knows, that the one thing she loves the most, it's frequently argued by everyone whether her love is artificial or not, but everyone knows, that the one thing she loves the most, is Kyuukai Tokiwa. Her father.

And he's vowed that she'll always be his KIT.

At a certain base in the country of Germany, a maiden was receiving the revelation that would change her life forever.

Laura paced back and forth as she tried to stifle her growing panic at what was happening. “Okay, just calm down Laura, you are a strong soldier and the pride of your unit. You’re not falling in l-l-love with this-this.....” She couldn’t even finish her sentence.

‘Perfect example of manhood?’ A voice echoed from inside her head, mocking her inability to fully deny her feelings for the first time in her life.

“Shut up!” She yelled out to no one.

‘Kiss him already! He won’t find out, he’s sleeping!’ The voice tried to urge her.

“B-But-“ Laura didn’t know what to do: Kiss him and risk him finding out or hold it in and lose her chance? Truly, a riddle for the century had been formed here.

‘Look at those soft lips and that cute sleeping face, you know you want to~’ The voice once again spoke out in a sing-song manner, making her will to resist weaker and weaker.

With a blushing face, Laura leaned in and placed her face closer to his. A slight movement would be enough for the two of them to-

“NOOOOOO~!” With a loud yell, Laura suddenly backed away as she realized what she was about to do.

Laura was past the first stage of panicking and was moving onto the second stage: Denial.

Miraculously, while this was happening, the boy in question remained in his sleep and didn’t even seem to acknowledge the earth shattering (to her) event that was happening right in front of him.

Laura panicked even more and tried calm herself down. She was going to lose her sanity at this rate if he didn’t stop being so cu- making her panic! No, she did not think he was cute!

With a deep breath, Laura once again tried to wake up the adorabl- stupid! She meant stupid young man! “Ichika, wake up, we have to go back already.” She shook his shoulder but there was no response from the sleeping teen.

Laura sighed and grabbed his shoulder before draping it over hers in a fireman’s hold and started to drag him into the inside of the small living area. He was larger than her slightly but her strength was enough for her to successfully carry him inside.

“Hello, is anyone awake?” She looked around the area and found that it was pitch black with no signs of movement anywhere. It looks like everyone had gone to sleep.

With another sigh, Laura carefully maneuvered to her bed, using her trained vision to see any obstacles that may have lay on the ground before finally making it to her personal bed.

‘Finally!’ Laura thought as the thought of sleep crossed her mind. Now, all she needed to do was set Ichika down and she could finally go to sleep. Simple right?

Wrong....

Laura gently sat on the bed and tried to remove the arm encircling her small neck so both of them could go to sleep.

Ichika stirred slightly as Laura tried to remove his arm and suddenly paced his other arm around her, trapping her in his embrace. “Mmmm~ Teddy bear....” He mumbled softly as he rubbed his face against hers.

“I-I’m not a teddly bear!” Laura mumbled as she tried to resist the urge to yell out in a panic. She was a trained soldier, not a helpless little girl!

“Soft~”

‘Got to get out of here’ Laura struggled and shook left and right but he wouldn’t budge, this continued on for 5 more minutes before she gave up.

Unfortunately, her “captor” had caught her in a vice like grip so she was stuck like this. Resigning herself to her current condition, she closed her eyes and tried to sleep.

@ Rain - It's interesting, but I can't use it. If you're using it in HOTM then I can't use it i Shadow since readers will comment on it being a carbon copy of yours.

@ Eratas: Aw... She's an important part of Kyuukai's character in later chapters.

It doesn't have to be a carbon copy, he could have different motives, and the scenes could be different. But the general idea's the same. He wants to be a father some day, but he can't achieve that dream with his curren't life. So he starts to slowly make the decision. Koneko helps him lean towards moving on instead of staying as a soldier.

You could have Irish mock him as he builds her skeleton, and have Kyuukai argue with him. Kyuukai could goad Irish into helping him somehow, even going to beg him to help out. This shows that Kyuukai's willing to get over some things to get things done with the guy.

Maya visits him, over the course of the 5 days, and Irish could ask her why Kyuukai's obsessing over Koneko. Maya could start explaining the bonds of family and love in her terms, in a way that Irish starts to slightly appreciate it, but still doesn't really understand it. They could bond over that. Also, it puts Kyuukai out of action for 5 days (unless for little segments), and you can focus more effort onto the other two protags.

Also, she could be a reason for the two to "bond" in Shadow.

Also, the draft's great! I laughed quite a few times.

@ Senpai and Rain - Innocent romance is harder to write than borderline lime Writing Tatenashi's took me less than 10 minutes compared to this.

Laura awoke to the feeling of something pressing down on her chest. Upon closer inspection, she found the source to be a hand not so graciously rubbing her still developing bosom.

'W-What!?' She quickly turned to the side and found her "bunk mate" still sleeping even as he performed this heinous act of perversion.

"Marshmallow~" She resisted the urge to moan as he continued to gently massage her chest and did the only thing she could at this point. With her free hand, she pinched his cheek as hard as she could, eliciting a pained response from the sleeping teen.

"Ow~ The marshmallow but me~"

@ Rain - I'll see what I can do about it. Why don't I just replace her with Canan? The family bonding can be seen from that and it makes Kyuukai seem less creepy about it since he's kind of acting like Jigsaw at that point.

Laura just lack the drive to hurt him, he might be stronger, but a punch or elbowing from a super-soldier is another stuff...

@ Eratas: Then again, Canan is 16 and she's already thinks Irish is her father.

In HotM, she thinks my male pilot (the plausible one) is her father.

Also, the creepy factor is intentional. He acknowledges the fact it's creepy. But he's relatively unstable (this point in the plot is a top secret spoiler), but in his honest to god heart and mind, he really does love Koneko.

And he didn't program her to love him back. She learned to do so. After all, she was online for those 5 days. When Kyuukai let his heart out to his daughter laying on the table.

@ Rain - Once again, I REALLY want to but people would comment too much on the similarities. Hell, you can tell the changes in Shadow from HOTM already such as FRACTURE being weaker and Tabane being more morally gray. If I put it in, you KNOW reviewers are going to get pissy about it. Putting in Canan is already a risk but I'm already trying to change her to fit with Shadow's theme. Don't you have any other ideas?
