Anime for adults (no sex)?
I remember the days of the nineties, with Tokyo Babylon, Doomed megalopolis, street fighter, Ninja scroll, and all these animes.
I even liked Akira, Darker than black, Hunter X hunter, but from there things only went downhill seemingly! Nowadays anime seems to be aimed at kids of 13 and younger! The only good ones I've recently watched are Death Note, and perhaps Ghost in the shell; and even they are a couple of years old by now! Is there anything recent that is worthy of the adult anime title? (no sex or porn, just serious anime, with some violence, or harder to understand story). I find Anime like MS Windows, continuously aimed further away for my needs and desires. I am 31, but that should not stop me from finding some good entertainment! Thanks! |

I think Sword of the Stranger movie will fit fine. Maybe Time of Eve.
Fate/Zero and maybe Mawawaru Penguindrum but that takes a while to setup. Not sure if Durarara will hold your definition of "for adults" Kaiji and perhaps Akagi. Oh, and I feel the same way about MS office as you feel about Windows, lol

Agreed about MS Windows.....wait, this is off-topic.
Okay, I'll second Fate/Zero. Also, have you seen Last Exile? coz the sequel series Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing is airing now. Furthermore, since you're a fan of Hunter x Hunter, there's a remake of it airing now too.

I will mention some oldies just in case too:
Aoi Bungaku series are set of small dark stories, some are better than others. All of them cover some important themes. Some might be hard to understand. Baccano! does have comedy but it also has a lot of violence and series were done in a very creative and thoughtful way. Berserk are very strong series, the further you go the more fun series get. Has violence and blood Claymore is a bloody action though girls do all the killing Elfen Lied covered a lot of tragic and goeresome moments. not hentais but has a lot of nudity. Ga-Rei Zero does have some anime standard moment but the further story goes, the darker it gets. Has a lot of blood and killing, some mind playing Ghost Hunt are great detective series about ghosts. You can learn a lot of new stuff, has some creepy moments. Monster are seriouse detective series about surgen who is trying t o stop his ex-patient (a serial killer nowadays). Biggest part of cast are adults. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom are excellent series about assasins and their life in underground as wel as about their dreams and wishes Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin another strong series that should match your taste. Shiki are really good series about vampires. Steins;Gate were good series, the real fun began after episode 12 though. But it covers some nice themes and makes you think. Sword of the Stranger is a great movie about samurais. Great soundtracks and action. You could try Hundred Stories, am watching them right now. A lot of weird and creepy stuff going on, be prepared. The art is very different, in dark colours and unimportant characters look like monsters or puppets... If you don't plan to watch F/SN then you can try to keep up with Fate/Zero. But if you do then better watch F/SN first. It is worse than F/Z but if you will watch them other way around, F/SN will lose all its good qualities.

My favorite anime from within the last five years that wasn't primarily aimed at children:
Armored Troopers Votoms: Pailsen Files. This has a lot more impact if you've already watched Armored Troopers Votoms, a 52 episode series from 1983. But, even as a standalone, it's pretty good. Votoms was basically the adult reaction to Gundam, and this last OVA continues to hold to that stricture with a story steeped in politics and military tactics surrounding a group of soldiers being used as test subjects in the military's quest to find soldiers with the uncanny ability to survive even the toughest situations. Cat Shit One. If you're a red-blooded male in your thirties, chances are pretty good you're gonna really enjoy this. Don't let the cute bunnies troll you. Eve no Jikan The concept is simple: man and machine coexist in a society very much like our own. Machines have evolved into androids and must respect Dr. Asimov’s Three Laws. They now belong to an entire new caste, one that is deemed inferior to ours and are easily distinguishable from their human counterparts because of a glowing, floating halo-type ring above their heads. Tension, intolerance and racism have become part of everyday life due to the widespread increase of android usage. Our protagonist is a high school student named Rikuo. He and his mate Masaki stumble upon a very unusual hangout following the discovery of a series of bizarre incidents. In fact, Rikuo’s android Sammy, had been slipping out during the afternoons to who knows where and the duo was determined to find out why… Flag. Sometime in the near future, a violent civil war erupts in a small, mountainous country of Uddiyana. The United Nations Forces quickly intervenes by taking over the capital city in the interests of brokering peace talks, and during the chaos that ensues, a Japanese photographer named Saeko Shirasu takes an iconic photograph. The photo quickly becomes cherished around the world as a symbol for peace in Uddiyana. Because of public outcry, a date is set for the two sides to meet and sign a peace accord to end the feuding. A few weeks before the signing, however, the flag in the photo is stolen. Fearing that any chance for peace will be lost if the flag is not found, the UNF creates a special task force to find it. The best minds of the free world are gathered together, and among them is Shirasu, who will document this top secret mission. Kaiba. First off, do not be trolled by its aesthetic design. It is now possible to store memory data, so that the death of your body is not actually "death". As memories are stored in databanks, they can be "transferred" to new bodies. Because so-called "memory trading" now occurs, it is now possible to steal memories and illegally alter them. Society has fallen apart as authority has become lost and stagnant. One day, a man awakens in a ruined room. His name is Kaiba. He has no memories, but he does have a pendant with a picture of an unknown woman inside. In the skies are roiling clouds and electrical storms, impossible to pass without losing one's memories; above them lies the elusive realm of the rich and powerful, who barter others' bodies and memories for their own enjoyment and longevity. Below lies a troubled and dangerous world where good bodies are hard to come by and real money is scarce. After suddenly being attacked, Kaiba escapes into space, and during his travels meets all sorts of people and regains his memories. Throughout it, he continues to be troubled by the world's problems, as well as his own existence. And what of the woman in the pendant, Neiro? Le Chevalier D'Eon. 18th Century, France. Lia de Beaumont, loyal servant of Versailles and its King, Louis XV, is found dead in the river Seine. Floating inside a coffin, on which the word "Psalms" was written, her body had been poisoned by mercury, thus preserving decay. According to the Church, the soul that belonged to a corpse incapable of being consumed by the soil will forever wander in the human realm, unable to go to Heaven. This greatly affects D'Eon de Beaumont, Lia's brother and one of the king's spies. He vows to discover by whom - and why - she was murdered. But he never expected that the one who conducting the revenge would be Lia, now possessing D'Eon's body! And what will the knight do when this quest might risk France itself? Moonlight Mile. After scaling Mt. Everest, mountain climbing partners Saruwatari Gorou and "Lostman" Jack F. Woodbridge see the ISA Space Station, and each vows to make the trek into outerspace. When Helium 3, a new energy source, is discovered on the moon, NASA forms a new project named "Nexus" to harness that energy for use on earth. This is the story of the two and the paths they take to see their dream become a reality in the quest to harness the next-generation energy source. Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin. Seven teenagers in 1955 have to learn to live together in the same hold in the reformatory of Shio. Confined in a hall where suffering and humiliation are daily, they are waiting for a ray of hope in a dark, incarcerating world. The story follows their life together and how they move on afterwards. Real Drive. This is a story of a cyber diver, Masamichi Haru, who investigates the incidents that lie between Reality and the Metal. I'd say more, but there's no real way of summarizing this one in a short paragraph or two. It's on the slow side, so if that type of pacing turns you off, steer clear. Otherwise, this is a great bit of cyberpunk anime. Tetsuwan Birdy Decode:02. First off, having seen the first series helps a lot. I didn't list the first series here because it's a very different show than this, its sequel. The first series is far more generic teenage fare (though a very solid one). It basically focused on the kid part of this duality between Birdy and Tsutomu. This sequel focuses on the adult side, Birdy. The story takes its nod from that and runs through themes of love, duty, loss...and violence. Some very surprising violence. This is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated and underwatched shows in the last five years, primarily due to the very different feel of its predecessor causing many people to not even give this show a chance. So, to fully appreciate this, you probably should watch its not-quite-adult-oriented predecessor first.

I highly recommend Seirei no Moribito. It's ironic as it was adapted from a YA novel, but Kamiyama Kenji improved the story tremendously. It's as patient, mature and complex a story as you'll see in anime and has superb production values.

Usagi drop is probably intended for young adults, but it's a completely different genre than from most of the series mentioned in this topic.
edit: it has no violence though |

There are plenty of them, the nineties English release merely focused on more OVA/movies rather than TV animation. BTW, HxH is as kid as any other shonen as well.
But Bakemonogatari, Durarara, Monster, Claymore are all decent titles...

Doesn't matter if it's an old thread, it's still a valid thread regardless of how old it is.
I bet a lot of adults right now would like a nice list of adult animes; I've seen hundreds of tv-series, thousands of eps, and wished there was some kind of guidance on a good mature series. And yes, I revived this thread, because all previous series are still valid |
