Actually, the date for the fourth movie has been announced already: May 24th, 3 days after the first DVD release.

There's even a trailer for that, too.

Ah no wonder, only just found out about it now and looked it up on ANN.
The first thing that came to mind was Tsukihime and now I know why .
Looking forward to watching it.

Am I the only one who feels terribly underwhelmed by the first episode?

I love Type-Moon. I love the universe. I love Yuki Kajiura (whose fault this unpleasant first episode it was NOT). Generally, I have nothing against slow-moving mysterious setups. And the animation was perfectly fine too.

But I'd by lying if I said I enjoyed it.

Pseudo-philosophical babbling which felt endless. A complete absence of suspense or tension. Low-key droning again and again and again. Who is the "opponent"? Is there any to begin with? What is this mess about? Heck, I couldn't even say if this was the beginning of a continuous storyline, or rather the complete end of a first chapter.

Sorry. But based on my hopes and expectations, this was a _bitter_ disappointment.

The first chapter is the worst of the seven followed by chapter six.

Hmm. I think I understand the problem that you have with this movie.

In most of his work, Nasu tends to typically use the first part, the introduction, as a means to introduce the themes that he'll be exploring during the rest of the story. It's been done in Tsukihime (with Shiki meeting Aoko Aozaki), and it's been done in Fate (with Shirou's desire to become a hero of justice). So this first movie, which is an adaptation of the first chapter, is exactly that - an introduction. It doesn't make for exceptionally good standalone material, and many consider the first chapter of the novel rather weak in comparison to the other stories.

Personally, I believe that the cast has done a pretty decent job regardless, even if there are flaws (philosophies are introduced with the subtlety of a jackhammer for one, although this is typically something that Nasu has trouble with in general, and not really the fault of the animation crew). Not to mention that as an introduction, it allows the audience to understand the characters and the general atmosphere pretty well, which I believe should be the main purpose of an introduction in the first place.

Remember that even some of the best of anime, like for example Legend of the Galactic Heroes, don't have immediately captivating beginnings. It's best to treat the work like an episode of an anime series (The animation crew set up the release schedule for this purpose, iirc) instead of like an actual movie.

Just finished watching this, and I have to say I'm really impressed. Some of the character's faces looked a bit strange (I know that I'm selfish for expecting the characters to look as good as they were in the book, but I hoped anyway), but the music and gorgeous scenes really impressed me. There's no need to say anything about the story since my words cannot possibly describe how great the story is. Now, to hunt down the soundtrack.....
