In Seisen no Iberia most of the words are either in Spanish or in Arabic...
Shaytan speaks in Spanish, saying things like "Me llamo Shaytan" (My name is Shaytan), hermano Mayor (Elder brother), hermano menor (Younger brother). Layla speaks in Arabic... "Al Fellah" (I think it means peasant) ,"Al Rai" (I think it's Shepherd, but again I'm not sure) Spanish is used once again for words like Reconquista (which means Reconquest, but refers to a period of war where the Christian fought the Muslims over the Iberian peninsule), Dios which means God and is also used for territorial references as Aragón, Cataluña, Castilla, León, Hispania Romana, etc... And Shaytan's name (شيطان) means devil in arabic. |

I did a bit translating for 争いの系譜. Well I must admid that my Japanese isn't very good, and English is my second language, so there may be mistakes or strange wordings...

So聖戦のイベリアis the story of Layla and Shaytān the demon, and it links to the real history of Iberia. I think this album is more like a play. There are seemingly undying observers of the history (old oracle Sadi who deliver opening, ending, and a few lines in争いの系譜; three sisters who sang the myth and the history part), the demon Shaytān, and Layla the girl. The female voice at the beginning of 争いの系譜 and the male voice that has English lines all through the album are just narrators.
The story of Cain and Abel from Genesis is pretty obvious. Layla’s parents have different religions, (a Christian and a Muslim), when conflict began between two groups, so ended the peace of her home (it is possible that her parents killed each other). She felt bitter toward the world, but couldn’t side with either parties, and wondered who she shall hate. When she ran away from home, she was mortally wounded by a stray arrow from war (see the Live). She fell into the dungeon where she met the demon of flame sealed by blue stone. She signed contract with the demon, and acquired eternity. She said something about suicide. Suicide is forbidden for either Christian or Muslim, and when she gained eternity, I guess it also means the human Layla is also gone forever. Before Layla met the demon, her life had been miserable. She lost her love ones, and everything went against her wishes. The demon Shaytān had been imprisoned as long as time in the dark dungeon, being alone and almost forgot his own name. He thanked Layla for release him and vowed to protect her, and destroy everything that she hates. Is it Christian? Is it Muslim? Or is it “war”? And then the three sisters sang the history of Reconquista of Iberia. Maybe that’s the result of Layla couldn’t really decide which party to destroy. But after long years of watching the same repeating cycle, she finally understood “what” her enemy is. So Shaytān declared war to human, and forced them to unite. And that’s the end of the conflicts in Iberia…for now. |

Or that one of the women was pregnant? “-2” is also unclear, did one of the women die/suicide with the baby, or it’s just Abyss brought the girl away? And who is the one left? By the way, in the CD booklet, we can see two headless figures… The lyrics didn’t tell us who resemble those numbers, only the numbers themselves… |

Oh wow, glad to see all the translations going on! If it isn't too much trouble, could I get a translation of 永遠の少年 (Eien no Shounen) from Lost and a general summary of Chronicle 2nd? The little I understood was enough to get me interested ^__^

From what I understand, roman is about Hiver Laurent and his twin dolls Hortensia and Violette who represent day and life and night and death respectivly. To find the meaning of birth and death, Hiver searches for "romans"- stories, romances that involve life and death. Each song in the album is a seperate story.
There is currently a manga that's being scanlated that explains quite a lot so you might want to check it out. Edit: The first three chapters of the Roman manga can be found here: http://eternalbunnylove.com/?page_id=104 The stories are track 1 (Story of Night and Day), track 9 (The Wine of Sorrow and Joy) and track 5 (Stardust leash). The other two chapters that haven't been scanlated yet are tracks 7 (Statue of an Angel) and 3 (Invisible Arm). The PV for Miezaru Ude has been translated with subtitles as well. Chronicle is the first horizon, Thanatos the second, Lost the third, Elysion the 4th, and Roman 5th. In his early years Revo often wonders what’s on the other side of the horizon and dreamed of his stories, that’s why he named his band so, and that’s why he likes to use the word “horizon” in his songs, voiced or not. In lyrics, “horizon” often indicates “world”, “story”, and so on. There’s a very good translation for “詩人バラッドの悲劇” in page one, so I’ll skip this one.
But I would like to make a comment on “詩人” (translated as “poet”) and “詩” (translated as “poem”). They are both correct literally. However, “詩” means “poem” when pronounced “shi”, but means “song” when pronounced “uta”. In later tracks Aramary always use “uta”, so I think “詩” should be translated as “song”, and “詩人” as “bard” or “minstrel”. (Actually, I’m not so familiar with English culture, do poets sing?) |
