After Ami asks about Minori being guilty in the book the scene's a little longer, with Ami going off to the vending machine and hitting her head against the wall wishing she hadn't said it. We also get an inner monologue where she admits she was stirring up trouble (Partially) because she's jealous.
Have to agree with the votes so far, great episode, made Kitamura way more plastic than he is usually described.I also liked the ultra deformated (animation wise) facial emotions just after the fight, that's really something you can't have in the novel.

Now I am really interested in knowing Minorin's background, her thoughts etc. The "sense of guilt" part still makes me scratch my head, though SageGaiGar's post somewhat explains that. (Though I wonder am I spoiling myself with regards to later stories, not that I mind cause I always have a feeling this series is gonna be

Agreed, it *seems* to make the person not care about the story as long as "their character" is appearing.
I find Sumire fascinating but I have no desire to see the story shredded for her, nor would I be fond of a "popularity-driven" storyline that bounces around in response to polls.

It's quite misleading if you just put it like that. It keeps the shippers hopeful.

Highlighting the jealous part is very misleading.
The full text says that Ami was angry with herself for not handling it better because she wanted to be a better person. Also before Ami said the line the text describes Ami hating that Minorin is always so carefree. Also the text first said she had sympathy towards Minorin, then jealousy, then various others, and goes on to say Ami doesn't know what she wants and what to do anymore.
Sympathy here obviously means she feels sorry and knew that Minorin was and is going to go through a lot of emotional hardship, being caught in thinking that Ryuji/Taiga had something going so she burried her feelings.
Jealousy here can be interpreted - shippers would like to think that Ami is jealous of Minorin because of Ryuji's affection, but taking the full text as a whole and Ami's character it points more to the fact that instead of worrying about things and putting on a fake face like Ami herself is, she is jealous of the way Minorin handle things by that forward outlook. This is most apparent after the Sumire speech of herself being envious and wanting, but can't, be "a moron who only knows how to go straight forward". Ami was putting herself in the same shoes of Sumire and think that Minorin is the same type of straight forward people like Taiga/Ryuji who just confronts everything head on. She is jealous of the honesty of these people, which she, like Sumire, can't be.
EDIT: This is also what makes episode 4 (the "original" episode) a good episode in retrospect - it highlights this forward thinking aspect of Minorin which was never clearly explained in the novel.

I would like to wonder if people still think the pace of this anime has compromised its meaning. Even with the skipping of so many scenes from the novel, it still manages to capture the emotions in their true glory. Whatever messages that JC staff can't fit into the 24mins, they make them subtle, or up to the viewers' interpretation. As far as I can tell, the series is solid, and few emotions, if any, have been lost.

From what I've read of the novel so far..... its a shame that they only got two seasons, they're doing a remarkable job of capturing the *spirit* of the story. Yet it is still only a dim reflection of the story.
In other words, they've done almost as well as one could hope given the constraints. If it gets people to buy the novels (or the manga) then its a flaming success.
It seems something which is given less to start out with and given less attention will always triumph over another which is bathed in funding and attention. Yes, if they ever create a season 3, I hope JC staff will create it with the same spirit as they did with the first two. With the increase in "attention", somehow it could get messy.
Toradora! is like a fantastic product, but not advertised or publicized a lot. Great, but will it sell great?
This is a general point, not specific to episode 16 but it addresses some comments I've seen in this thread.
Translating written works to drama, whether live action or animation is not an easy process. There are time constraints involved -- people I know who write screenplays for a living say that a page of text in a book on average equates to a minute of screen time, and I've read the same thing elsewhere. The makers of Toradora! have 24 episodes each with 20 minutes of story-time to fill -- that's 480 selected pages of text excerpted and modified to build into a consistent engaging story on screen. Something has to be cut at every step to make the anime work, and since different people like different bits of the novel storylines some of them are going to be disappointed as their favourites get the chop.
I've not read the light novels but the Wikipedia summary lists a bunch of characters who have not made the cut into the anime (Sumire's sister, for example). Sub-plots have been minimised (the homeroom teacher's love life) and details removed where they don't advance the story (Kitamura's motorcycle, the Sumire family's fear of snakes). These cuts are necessary to make space for the stuff that matters. That's just how it is, folks.

Ami made a move to get up, but thought better of it, instead crouching back down to continue tidying the notes that were scattered on the floor. But she noticed the weight of the student handbook in her pocket, and stopped what she was doing once again, thinking of that person's usual actions. Ami also stood up expressionless like Minori. That's right.
It wasn't just sympathy, for there was also a certain degree of jealousy, and a myriad of other...emotions mixed together, so much so that she didn't know what to do anymore. She didn't know what she wanted to do, and didn't understand, as she couldn't do it correctly.
She wasn't able to make her wish come true. She was unable to change, to become the person that she wanted to be.
Nothing like what you described is mentioned (Ami being angry with Minori being carefree.), is there a problem with the wiki?
