You do not underestimate a kid's mind, remember child developed their mental as they grow, grow with bad childhood and it's a damn miracle to survive as proper adult.
Please accept it as advice and not argument.

I never accept it as an argument I asked a question, so I expect answers that don't exactly agree with my previous mindset
Anyway, is it odd for a child who was abused to still try and defend their parent when he/she's in danger?

Stockholm effect?
This happen very often, in fact. It's wrong way of imprinting, but imprinting nonetheless If this happens, then the person defending the abuser is mentally disturbed to certain degree and pretty much require rehabilitation, or at the very least psychotherapy and/or a lot of emotional support...

@ Senpai - I planned to use it as an ironic echo to show how Irish differs from both the past and present. In the past he defended his almost complete monster dad when he should've been happy he was getting killed while in the present he encourages killing anyone who has a possibility of being a threat.

Wow, good point.
Rin also did pretty much the same thing, Ichika are this close to permanently crippling a girl who... erm, went too far with bullying and almost caused fatal injury in Rin herself. Cue 9 months later and Rin beat the crap out of her when she's not repenting at all.
