Check your device manager.
Right click on my computer and select Properties
Select hardware then Device Manager

Expand (click on the '+') Sound, Video and game controller
- do you see your sound card listed?
-> If not, then try detecting for it (add/remove hardware)
- Is there a yellow '?" next to it?
-> if yes, your drivers are messed up. Delete the soundcard and reboot.
-> Windows will ask for the sound card drivers and ask to reinstall

Hmm. I see that it's a built-in sound card for the VIA motherboard. Check your BIOS. If it's the same motherboard/system that is sold at Frys/Outpost.com, then there is a known stability issue with the shipping BIOS.

Seeing that you are well versed in basic troubleshooting, did you install the soundcard tools that came with your system to test the output jacks for your card? Sometimes, it could be that the 8MM jacks could have been remapped (e.g. 5.1 sound vs 2.0 sound). Check to see if this is true.
