Traditionally, you would know that they were originally free mods created for the first half life. They were separate teams unrelated to Valve (now absorbed by the company), and now they worked internally to develop the source versions of their games. They're 100% free, it's why Half Life 2 is actually a great buy, you can get 4 good games in one (don't forget Team Fortress Classic!). They don't come with Half Life 2, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe once you have Half Life you can just download the others off of steam for free as long as you have a legitimate HL2 CD-KEY.

You will get CS: Source when you get Half-Life 2. Acutally, valve was cheap this time around, there will be no multiplayer for HL2, thats where source comes in. CS: Source will be the multiplayer for HL2.
As for DoD: Source, i'm not sure, it really depends on what package you ordered. If you got the basic package, then no. If you got the Gold Really-Friggin-Expensive package, then you might get DoD: Source. Best way to check: www.halflife.net. |

Could care less for regular shoot'em'up games like CS or DoD -I'm waiting more for those teamwork and commanding games. I heard that HL2 requires you to verify it ONLINE before you can even play it -and this includes single-player too.
*Sigh* So much for respect -one more reason for me NOT to *buy* it until those mods come out. |

wirthe some of the mods sound awsome
like for example there is one u have to command a fleet of ships (player ships) these include transport ships for taking them to the station and fighters for escorting them. after which if they make it they dock with a station and begin to invade and take control over it. each time the map changes u take a diff part of galaxy and move on. it sounds brillant.

Also, clarification, CS:S has been out for about a week or two through Steam, if you want it. |

Half Life 2 heading for arcades!
Just saw this news on gamespot.com, sounds insanely costly to play. Would be cool though, although would mostly be used for Counter Strike probably.

I know CS was ported to arcades long time ago but this one is surprising given HL2 will no doubt be a pretty lengthy singleplayer. The article doesn't state whether it's CSS for the multiplayer arcade, but I'm pretty sure I heard the PC version will not have HL2 multiplayer which is potentially a plus for the arcade.
The arcade version has coop which is cool, I think it's not even in the PC version yet but I hope it will be. |

Sorry for bumping this thread, but want to talk about Half-Life 2, and this thread seems at least Half-Life 2 related. Can a mod just change the title to just "Half-Life 2"? Anyways...
Right after my last class from university, I drove a bee-line straight to Futureshop, and got my copy of Half-Life 2 collectors addition ($99.99 Canadian, $113.99 after tax in total). And yes, it is just single DVD, with a T-shirt, and a Prima hint book with original artwork and sketches . Installation took about 5 gigs in total. Took a hellova long time to "unlock game files" on Steam; took in excess of 30 mins before the game loaded. Anyways...I am just GIDDY and hyped up with excitement after playing it for about an hour or so. I just have to share my experiences! Spoiler for READ AT YOUR OWN RISK:
Needless to say. I'm thrilled! Back to gaming! Gonna be no time for anime next few days . |

However... did you say that even if we buy the retail set, we have to still unlock the whole thing through Steam?!! |

That's kinda tacky you have to unlock the files thru Steam even if you only play to play Single-player? I just assumed the unlocking was for those people who had pre-loaded the game via a Steam subscription.
As was stated before, you get CS:Source with all retail box and Steam packages. DOD:Source is only available via Silver or Bronze package of Steam subscription. I've heard this is because Valve distributes DOD:Source thru Activision, and Counterstrike is thru Vivendi like Half Life 2. So most likely there will be a retail box of DOD:Source from Activision in the future. |

Yes, even to play single player, you have to type in the CD key, and it'll "verify your purchase", and then it'll "unlock game files". When it's done, Half-Life 2 will appear in your Steam's list of games for you to play. I think Valve is being over protective of its game due to the hack incident that resulted in stolen code.
Yebyosh, the system requirements isn't too bad, at least, not as bad as Doom 3. Let me put it this way. In Doom 3, I had to run the game at it's lowest settings at a resolution of 800x600. Even then it's still choppy, so I had to tweak the game. Half-Life 2, however, I'm running all settings at least at medium, at a resolution of 1024x768 with acceptable framerates. |

Bought it right after my class. Anyone who has ever bought a mmorpg on launch day will feel right at home. Took me about an hour to begin playing and that was after I took about 40 mins installing it. The hour was spent trying to register on Steam which was a pain in the ass but it should get better soon. Also directly underneath your cd-key is a couple more numbers and letters which I mistook for part of my cd-key. For some reason there is even room for you to put those numbers in. Checked the thing about 20 times, turning 0's into O's and 1's into L's before I figured out it wasn't even part of the cd-key .
Graphics and gameplay are amazing. For some reason I can't stop thinking about how sweet the water looks. The physics are fantastic, they came up with some pretty good puzzles too. Anyway there are like a million websites you can go to to read about all the good stuff its time for me to express the only gripe I have....WHERE ARE THE GIBS!? I cant frag Barney!?!? Or any of the good guys? Thats all I remember about Half-Life, letting Barney do his duty and then beating him to death with the crowbar and stealing his gun. Maybe it will change later on when I get better weapons but I have thrown grenades and shot explosive barrels next to guards and no giblets . Everything else rules though . Oh and while the graphics of counter-strike have improved the people have not. In the first 5 minutes of play I was called the n word and accused of using aimbot lol. Guess after 2 years of not playing I still have some skillz . |

Hehe, i got my copy of Half-life 2 yesterday, release day. I also picked it up at Future Shop, like Muir Woods, for a price of $68.49 CAN (i just got the "bronze" pack).
My PC is around 3 years old right about now... but it still plays it, just to say to anyone who is worried. My current specs: P4 2.0 gHz processor 768 MB RAM nVidia geforce 2 mx 100/200 32 MB Windows XP It doesn't look so great, but it's playable. Two words for those who haven't gotten it: Get.Now. Lol. But, if you have a highspeed connection, i suggest getting the Silver package off of Steam, especially if you don't have the rest of the Steam cache (CS 1.6, DoD, HL, Team Fortress Classic, etc.). Loading the game from steam is much easier than installing it from CD, so i have heard. |
