Here are some comparisons for the real world locations for some of the set pieces used in the anime.

Oy oy... already with the yuricest artwork? She's got a perfectly legitimate yuri option in Aoi, yet they had to go for the sister instead? Already? The first episode is barely even out!

I don't know how I should process what I've just watched, but I'm strangely filled with the urge to request for a gif of a sunrise. This particular sunrise occurs in episode 1, between the timecode of 0019-0023. If it is doable, I shall thank you sincerely. Yours truly!

Sigh. Being the nice person I am, I felt obligated to go looking. EDIT: You know what, scratch that. I was going to link you to the post that had it, but I changed my mind. Rather than link to a post that includes outright nudity of Akane (go look for it yourself if you want it) on a site filled with porn, I'll just post the gif myself. Better for all involved that way.

That sun is blinding. I had to squint which was totally uncalled for.

Thank you, sincerely, good sir!

It could very well be a Space-based solar power system, like those microwave power plants found in earlier Sim City games. The concept is that a satellite collects solar energy and uses EMR of some sort, like microwaves, to transmit the energy to a ground receiver.

The concepts have been around since the 1970s and are capable of transmitting a few kilowatts of energy, so it's not too difficult to scale things up and have the system supply enough energy to address humanity's energy requirements by the time Vividred Operation happens

VROOM 01 - Science Aesthetic Miracle

Though it's very structurally similar to Strike Witches, VRO actually feels a lot more like a traditional magical girl series, with the transformation sequences and the mascot(/grandpa) assisting our heroine. (I am aware that Witches had animal familiars, but they've never really been emphasized in the anime.) I enjoyed Strike Witches a lot, but some of the elements this has in place - the futuristic setting and the largely fictional technology, not to mention a smaller number of heroines in the core cast - means I may end up slightly preferring this one. That everyone is designed and named like they were members of Bioman is also a plus.

The scenery looks really nice, and Akane's a great character. Though... a red-haired girl voiced by Ayane Sakura with a large amount of focus on her butt. Come on, fanart community, don't let me down here. Though with the pastoral setting and the way Akane's family life is like, I also thought a bit of Tamako Market. I compare because I love. The Palette Suits haven't actually done anything yet, so I'm looking forward to seeing them in action.

Akane's also not the first character I've encountered this week who loves mayo that much.

There's at least three magical or quasi-magical girl shows on the air this season, and for me, this means good times are ahead.

Could be... or it could be drawing energy from another universe, which would explain why the aliens are showing up looking for it.

I was very much looking forward to this show, though my expectations might have been too high. This first episode was rather disappointing, though I'll still give it more of a chance. I guess I just can't enjoy anime that are derivative jumbles of tropes anymore, without any coherent sense or original plot.

For a great science fiction novel based on this concept, read "Energized" by Edward M. Lerner.

I heard discussion like that previously from a previous page. If memory serves, another work did just that, and the dimensional issues it created led to conflict.

I find that a great deal of stuff out there is indeed derivative, but this could alternately be thought of as being redesigned for whatever the market of the current age demands. From a reductionist point of view, nothing is exactly original in that sense, but I nonetheless enjoy things for the nuances that different works have. Whether or not I continue to follow Vividred Operation, for instance, will depend entirely on how they execute the story. Akane's nice posterior is icing on the cake.

I might have to check it out; thanks for the suggestion

There was a science-fiction novel I read many years ago where a scientist who was experimenting with... something, I forget what, managed to be contacted by aliens from another universe. After learning how to communicate, they sent him a message that was basically "We're friendly aliens, really, and just to prove how totally nice and peaceful and friendly we are to you and not up to anything bad at all, no sir definitely not, here's some instructions and schematics on how to build a machine that will give you infinite energy." And it worked perfectly and seemed like a godsend and everyone was happy, except for one other scientist who tested things and pointed out that the way the machine was constantly bringing energy into the universe was eventually going cause the universe to become unstable and... well... explode. Nobody felt like listening to him, because they had all this marvelous free enegy! Look at all the wonderful things they could accomplish now! Why should they listen to that kook over there talking about exploding universes, what did he know?

Anyway. I read that a long time ago, but that's what came to mind when Akane mentioned having unlimited energy from that thing.

It's the "Engine of Infinite Fate" Dornkirk is developing in Escaflowne. At least we know what this one's actually FOR, but not how it works. To twist the words of someone else on the internet: Magic because SCIENCE. (The other guy said magical girls because SCIENCE. That also applies.)
