I'm blown away. This episode made one hell of a first impression. Right from the start, my first thought was "WTF am I watching?" I'm 100% sure this isn't gonna be your typical, sugar-coated mahou shoujo, but (as said) more along like Nanoha (the whole trippy scene where Madoka finds Kyubey reminded me of the opening scene for the first Nanoha season).

So yeah, I am definitely not disappointed. I just hope they can keep this stuff up till the end, because anything else won't do this show justice, methinks.

Actually that's not Zan SZS but Guku SZS instead.

Mami :3. I know you will be my favorite one. I can't just resist girl who can say "I'll kill you" (kind of) with a smile like that. It made me tingling inside.

You know, when thing isn't go wrong, the world sure is bright and colorful , and then shit got real.

Apparently, there are people that still think this is "another moeblob generic mahou shoujo anime". I'm amazed at how people can be so ignorant and still talk as if they know what they are talking about.

I think that the 1st episode was so-so anyway, it was pretty generic presentation but SHAFT made it refreshing, but sometimes it was alittle weird (especially before and when Mami's got indruced,i'll keep looking at it since even if it's a Magical Girls anime the animation and plot seems to be strong.

Now that my euphoria has subsided, I'm starting to get scared Shaft won't be able to maintain this kind of stunning visual quality for long. Ah well, no use worrying about it now. Whatever will happen will happen.

I too think Homura is Madoka from the future, who came back in time to kill her younger self Kyuube in order to prevent Madoka from becoming a counter guardian magical girl. My only problem is that... it's just way too obvious. There were so many hints in the first episode only:
  • The dream at the beginning of the episode, depicting the future (?).
  • Homura knows the layout of the school despite just transfering.
  • She obviously knows Madoka very well.
  • She warns Madoka not to try to become someone else, or else she'll lose everything.
  • We learn that Kyube can grant any wish. Becoming another person should be possible.
  • Homura is quite simply perfect: she's so beautiful she leaves everyone in awe, she's incredibly smart, and her athletic abilities are more than impressive (she broke the prefectural record!). She's the kind of person most girls, including Madoka, would want to be.

That is so Fate/Stay Night in a way. I hope that won't happen.

Influenced? Urobuchi even named the school Homurabara before he decided to change it.

(Homurabara Gakuen = School in Fate/Stay Night)

I don't think that Homura is Madoka from the future. We've seen what older Madoka looks like in the OP. It's prob that in the future Madoka isn't alive any more or may be the one that Homura is fighting in the end. Madoka is prob important to how the future happened like Kyuube is. That's why Homura wants to kill Kyuube and prevent Madoka from being a magical girl.

My theory is that Homura is stuck in some kind of perpetual loop, ala Higurashi or Umineko. Something invades from the Other World, Homura fights it, she loses, the world is restarted at some point before invasion (most likely at the point right before she transfers school). Some loops before this one Madoka became aware of the whole struggle and she promised to become a magical girl to fight alongside Homura. That's a light of hope for Homura. But then Homura AND Madoka died a messy death. And then in the loops after that, Madoka didn't awaken anymore. Homura felt betrayed, and began telling the Madoka of each loop that she shouldn't change anymore... if she will only end up leaving her.

This theory seems so crack... except that Homura's name means "phoenix".
Also Mami is Bernkatroll

I usually stay away from Mahou Shoujo shows (the last one I fully watched and loved was Cardcaptor Sakura years ago, and let's face it - that's pretty old-school compared to the more modern interpretation of the genre), but the fact that Shinbo is overseeing this caught my attention...

All in all, it's quite a creepy, trippy start for me. I've only seen VERY few bits of Nanoha/Precure/etc. but I'm assuming it's pretty much the norm. The character designs are pretty strange, but the backgrounds are just impressive (especially that school, the glass classrooms with metal prison bars are kinda unsettling XD), the action sequences were all kinds of messed up and colourful, and I'm already getting the vibes of the genre deconstruction that may come later on...

Will be keeping my eye on this one... First anime series of the new season that I like... ^_^

O-O~

The first episode meet all of my expectations, and some more in the music department. Seriously the show sounds excellent, Kajiura's score here was A+ stuff. The animation and visuals were also great, and this is the sort of direction that reminds me why I like Shinbou's work. The designs, while good, I'd agree with those who said that it doesn't really work with the more surreal and darker imagery.

Great start regardless, this could easily become the best show this season.

PS: so Mami able to access her Unlimited Guns Works by using her magical dance pad?

@orion The theory is mostly based on Fate/Stay Night knowledge, and since we barely know anything about the show (it's only been one episode) it's mostly seeing how many similarities there are between the two works. That being said, I think from the way Homura treated Madoka, that she is trying to stop her from becoming a magical girl to protect her due to Homura's own experience and knowing the hardships that come with the job. It could be that Madoka dream was one where she never made the contract with Kyuube, and when things started going really bad, she made the contract and we looped to the current time./speculation

but we'll see.

That Homura really gives off Hitagi's vibe.
The way Saito Chiwa voiced her really matches the way she voice Hitagi.

Nice show.
Kinda bored at first half, but then got really exciting during 2nd half of the show.
As usual, Shinbo really shows unusual art for anime...

If this goes ala Fate/Stay Night and Homura/Madoka is the equivalent of Shirou/Archer I am going to stab my eyes. Seriously.

I wouldn't go that far but I do hope that they are more original than that.
