Seriously, Kimetsu no Yaiba does the best of both worlds: sure, it gets rid of the fanservice that draws boys in (and turns off many girls in the process), but in replacement, you get multiple guys that probably DO appeal to female readers. That probably bumps it up more than the other thing: sure, guys like their fanservice, but the action and fight sequences are (mostly) right up shounen's alley... and on top of all that, the most recently popular manga all share another common factor: lots of blood and gore, almost to seinen levels (The ones of which I'm speaking: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Chainsawman, and Jujutsu Kaisen... all three heavier than normal shounen on the blood. Apparently that's appealing now.)

Jump titles always have fangirls regardless. And no, I highly doubt Chainsawman will be anywhere near as successful as Kimetsu. Too niche even discounting the gore

Even Japanese are not sure why KnY is so popular compared to others. Most of their answers are something that other shonen titles also have.

It's one of the most puzzling phenomenon I've ever seen in entertainment. No one can even offer a credible theory.

There probably isn't going to be one. If it were that easy to figure out, we'd all be richer by now.

There's probably a myriad of factors including:
1) It's an enjoyable film (I haven't seen it)
2) It can attract the casual "zombie-flick" or "superhero" watchers. (It's literally just Samurai vs Demons)
3) It can attract kids because it looks "darker" and "cooler" than the stuff they usually watch, but isn't actually dark enough to inhibit parents.
4) It can attract a female audience (better than others)
5) It isn't a throw away film - it's actually canon to the story and I think people inherently understand how that makes it a more appealing
6) After a horrendous year, people wanted to watch a fucking film.

I read a certain web report about that Why KnY is hitting jackpot. it said "sometimes success has no reason but always fail has a clear reason".
I agree with it but this time has a reason that absense of rivals because of covid-19 and then KnY made a monopoly of multi screens of cinema complex.
Maybe that's why it became a tremendous launch.

Everything up to this point for me on why the KnY movie is popular was merely speculation- but yesterday I did manage to see it in Japanese theaters (despite my limited Japanese). Outside of the otherwise Perfect Storm for it to be popular, I think I can understand more now why it's so popular.

First, as someone else already said, the premise is as simple as you can get: Samurai vs. demons, good vs Evil. Add in the top-quality ufotable animation to that... but well, I'd argue there's more too.

Basically, it ends up being a throwback to the heyday of samurai movies. For those who are old enough, I was reminded of the movies Akira Kurosawa directed- there were certainly enough tropes in the movie!

Spoiler for Movie spoilers:

Beyond just Samurai vs. Demons, you get into the idea behind dreams. And what I'm thinking of specifically is one of the best episodes from the old 90's Superman: the Animated series. Basically, you're shown that which you lost, and it's easy enough to stay in the dream... so we get the trope of breaking free from the dream to go back to the painful reality. Tanjiro realizes what he must do, especially since the demon was trying to kill him via the dream. Hell, there's a bonus here too: we get to hear Nezuko speak all of... maybe two, three lines?

Then we have Rengoku... this arc is could also be called, Rengoku Blazes or such. He fills the Powerful Mentor to Tanjiro and the others. Then your typical shounen stuff of saving everyone, teamwork to finally kill the demon, etc.

But probably what takes it to the Next Level is the last part of the arc, where it pulls a Final fantasy 9: They kill the Dream Demon... only for the True Boss of the arc, Akaza, to show up.

This leads to one of the oldest tropes in the storytelling book, and one of the most successful: Mentor goes out like a Badass. The fight of Rengoku vs. Akaza, while Rengoku ultimately fails by only causing a retreat, is easily a 10/10. An insane fight, then his resolve to do Whatever It Takes, even though it will cost him his life... that's about as Powerful Trope-y as you can get! I know I was tearing up in the last part of the movie, and the ED song was soooo appropriate.

The rumors are that part of the reason why the mangaka decided to give the series a definite conclusion is that she wanted to get in on the Fate franchise, which at the time probably would've made her more money.

Now, Fate is DEFINTELY a multi-media franchise, but I have to wonder if she's gotten egg on her face otherwise with which one is making more money...

Demon Slayer is now the highest-grossing film in Japan of all time.

Actually, this kinda makes me a little sad. Not because Spirited Away managed to hold on for 19 years, but rather... well, let's put it like this: any stand-alone movies like Ghibli mean you can go into the movie blind. Or rather, there's no prerequisite to watching the movie. But now... well, if someone wants to see the #1 movie in Japan, it means they first have to go through about 10 hours of the anime series in order to understand the movie... and in normal times, people just don't have that kind of time.
