I gave this a 7.
I can't believe that compared to episodes 2 & 3 how ordinary this episode is (with the exception of the opening!). It also reminded me of why I hated ep 4 of Shuffle! and wanted to not only beat Rin upside the head with a baseball bat, but to also share that with the stupid writers of the anime! [rant] I know that it's in the culture of Japan, but come on! Why the heck does Nerine need to cook Rin a lunch to prove her feelings toward him? Isn't there things that she can do that are better than cooking??? But, no! Rin is the typical Japanese male who couldn't cook if his life depended on it and only manages to survive thanks to the bevy of cute girls around him who dote on his every need, and if a cute girl wants to be in his inner circle, she must be able to give him food! [/rant] <deep breath> I demand that Kyoto Animation re-do Shuffle! in the future and show those bakas how to properly do an anime based off a multi-ending visual novel!! |

Here's a situation where I may even rate the episode *lower* because it involves one of my favorite characters --- but gotta watch it first.... vote later.

Spoiler for Joudan:
I'm not sure. But there's idiom(or what?), "Delicious food can keep your husband not to go out at night." If you don't prepare delicious dinner, then your husband will go out to get some yummy food. And usually the disaster begins that time. Your husband encounter other beppin-san. Then you'll not hear the word "Dinner" again in your home. And then, then.........(Oh my darling you let me captured by another woman. where's your love?) So, I think Rin-chan has did a good thing. |

Well, in Nerine's case -- she's initially so shy and passive that cooking was an indirect thing she could do to compete with the other girls (who could all cook) in this culture where food is very important (there's a historical reason food seems to be a bigger part of culture in Japan). Apparently being smart, cute, protective, and tutoring Rin wasn't sufficient... which is the main thing wrong with the episode -- it seemed to imply her other advantages weren't worthy. Some minor points for Rin to respect her efforts and eat whatever she made.

Well, it's not like her other advantages weren't worthy. Rin is just your average blockhead male lead that doesn't care about girls unless they throw themselves at him. In contrast to most of the other male students, this type of harem lead doesn't care about girls at all (hmm.. is that homo or what ). The other type of harem lead is the one that "never had a girlfriend etc etc boohoo" and suddenly all those girls fall out of nowhere and he can't decide . But yeah, Rin falls in the first one, he's almost apathic until a girl either stuffs him with food or shoves various parts of her body to his face.
Personally, I prefer the second harem lead, seems more normal. But no, it's not Nerine's fault. If you look at it, he doesn't seem to really appreciate ANY other girl for who they are.

I hadn't thought about it really..... but yeah, the "no one ever really batted eyes at me" guy who suddenly has several painful choices to make seems a bit more on target than the "no testosterone" Rin type.....
There is a third type I guess... the Yuuichi "wow, <drool> girls! but I respects them" model.... of course, he has whole boxcars of unresolved issues... None of these seem to match the otaku personality type that worships girls but just falls to pieces if one actually looks at him.... (shy).

Actually, the Yuuichi type is non-harem. He's one of those people that seem concerned with the well-being of others but keep whatever interest they have to themselves. Yuuichi seems closer to a shoujo male character than a harem, if you don't count his abundant humor than doesn't match a shoujo male characters' prince charm. But he seems pretty normal in that he keeps a relative distance in contrast to other harem leads who seem to date all girls until they can make up their minds. Yuuichi's interaction with girls is on a whole different level than your average male lead, that's why he stands out. Most harem leads aren't like Yuuichi or To Heart's Hiroyuki (although that one is a bit on the blockhead side. I mean, come on, wake up and smell the roses )
And there's no way KyoAni would pick a series like Shuffle. I mean, some Haruhi-haters call SHnY shallow, but compared to this, most other harem series are philosophical. Thankfully, there's Kaede's arc And yes, you are right about the poor average otaku... Sad really... And Genshiken does a very nice work of depicting that. And so does NHK to some extent. Although I might be able to explain that. Otakus are bombarded with images of the "perfect girl". There are perfect girls for every otaku. Many otakus reach a point where they elevate anime girls to some sort of divine status. Not only that, but anime give hope that for even the most pathetic harem male lead, there comes a day that is a truly good day when one or more of those perfect girl goddesses will grace your sight and talk to you. Now imagine someone who spends more time alone in his dreams, hopes and fantasies than real girls. Communication skills get on a really low point, you have made yourself believe in the perfect girl, and then a girl seems to come out from your dreams and talk to you. Besides the awe and disbelief of such an occurrence, chances are you get nervous and don't know what to say because you aren't versed in communicating, chances are by that time your self-esteem has reached rock-bottom, and you feel you are unable to grasp the chance of the lead's lifetime, so you get even more nervous. EVERYTHING is against an otaku when a pretty girl talks to him, and it's not the girl's fault I remember in Genshiken how the other guys were amazed that "osananajimi" and "imouto" really exist. I mean, to me it seemed like someone telling them that God was taking a walk around school

Not to derail.. but I do sympathize with that nervousness as I was almost neurotically shy as a teenager about girls... to the point of heart pains if one spoke to me or if I had to call one.
I remember a history class with a really nice perky-gorgeous latino girl -- we'd divvy up into small groups for projects and since her name was "C-" and mine was "B-" we'd always end up in the same group where she'd sit next to me and run her toes up the back of my calf. I thought she was just torturing me ... but the five year reunion there was a sudden epiphany that she really *liked* me because I didn't treat her like some piece of T&A meat. d'uh me.... Two years later I was dating my future wife (short perky japanese doll) ... who basically asked *me* out under the pretext that she needed an escort for a club function. Yeesh, I was an idiot teenager. on topic: Furu's analysis seems fairly on target ... Nerine probably was terrified someone would find out that Daddy was the master of the hearth skills and even concealed it from Sia. Ah well.. "if I had been writing Shuffle!" Nerine's story would have been quite different (actually most of the arcs would have been quite different).

Thankfully Sia's actions afterward made that clear. But when the events in this recap were first aired in the original series my take on what happened was much different. I figured that it was either: "OMG! The little %$#@&! just dry-gulched Nerine right in front of everyone, and Kaede and Mayumi are unwittingly helping her!" or "Sia is such a complete airhead that she never even thought about how badly this would make Nerine feel." That's probably the main reason I originally did not care very much for Sia until after episode #10.

firstly nerine + cheerleader outfit = WIN the look on rin's face was just side splitting XD
secondly i feel really sorry for this cute blue headed demon...tbh she never even had much of a chance in the first place...being someone who mainly stands in the background her role is similar to that of kaede's quietness...but her devotion to rin is second to none... the end had my heart twisting left and right...poor girl on a happier note its really nice to see her nasty side...teaches those guys a lesson to never piss of the demon girl...and the only way to do that is to diss rin...well im dissing him now...rin go die! T_T *runs from nerine's wrath* and well another scene that is interesting is how asa helped her you learn to cook...not the backstabber you see everyday right? i mean teaching a enemy how to cook is like shooting yourself in the leg...just to prove that asa isnt all bad...unless shes actually luring all the other girls into a false sense of security

but well considering her expression and willingness to help at that time i could say thats its more innocent than evil...any reason to be? at that time she knows that she doesnt have a chance with rin being the only one not to have declare love for him...so i think that she wouldnt be thinking anything other than being kind...but when nerine asked her if she loved rin as well...the answer comming was "..." + blush...that gives it all away doesnt it but nerine didnt seem to mind (or notice) ~ it clearly shows that asa wernt out there to steal rin (yet ~ as she later developed the urge to seduce him some more )

Ya'll also have to remember that Nerine is completely okay with sharing a guy (points to the "threesome t-shirt" sequence)... so even though she spotted Asa submarining in extremely early in the series it didn't bother her too much.
I never got the impression that Nerine thought she would "win" (come in first) but she did hope to place in the polygamy solution (Sia, Nerine, Kaede, +random).

Anyone else having trouble with the MKV version of this episode? Normally I can play MKVs with VLC, but this file won't play. I tried the "Core Media Player" that is referred to on the main MKV site, but it would crash on opening the file.

The only good thing I can say about this episode is that had Nerine in it. There were a few nice moments from the series, but other than that it was nothing great.
I've had no problems. Try Media Player Classic. Providing you have CCCP, it can play pretty much anything. |
