Hmm well nothing was going to match with the awesomeness of last week....but they could have tried.
I mean I get that Fairy Tail likes to redeem characters and give some backstory to explain them....but I still don't care about Minerva. I don't like her or really care that she survived. I get it, she had a crappy father. So when does he get a flashback to explain why he's a bad person? I get it, the cycle of violence stuff, bad people do bad things to others and those people growing up with that become abusers themselves. But Minerva is still a bad person, a jerk, and the flashback didn't really do much to change my mind on that. Frankly I think Wendy saved this episode. She realized what was going on and stepped up. This isn't a time for whining, this is a time to figure out what to do. I do hate the standard cutting of the hair for symbolism...but at least there was some rationale here. Her hair was already kind of screwed up from the fight. Better to grow it again than go around with an uneven style . Man...the King needs to work on his petrification. That lasted like 5 minutes .

Well, it looks like the anime tried to use its time making Minerva's change just a little more credible than the manga, but it was mostly just more of what we got: Minerva's dad is a dick, so she became a dick to survive. I was kind of hoping the anime would let us see that secret weapon Minerva said she had to counter Erza's game-breaking Nakagami Armor, but maybe Hiro will give it to us in another arc.
Spoiler for Manga:

Episode 76
"I am your father". Ah, Silver.... Although I can't say I'm that surprised. Quite a bit of fighting this week which is something I welcome. I still think Gray/Silver's feud is the most interesting one from this episode though. Silver's laugh.....

Ok, I probably wasn't thinking too much about it and that's why I was surprised. But still, it was a heck of a pull to have Silver be Deliora using the corpse of Gray's father. I mean damn....as if Gray didn't have enough reasons to despise Deliora. You can't actually hate someone beyond what Gray hates this guy. Murdered his parents, his mentor died to seal away that darkness, and now he's back using the corpse of his father and basically making Ul's sacrifice meaningless. Not that it is entirely meaningless, but still it robs Ul of a good deal of her victory that she died for.
That is definitely the most interesting thing coming out of this episode. Gray is just going to devolve into pure rage mode here. This is literally the thing that has killed so many of the precious things in his life. While Gray has stated he wouldn't ever use Iced Shell....man this is an occasion that might piss him off so much that he can't help it. Rest of the episode was fine. Some good fighting, Lucy struggling to move even though she's done enough here, and at least making clear how they can stop Face.

Episode 77:
I think the episode captured the fight between Gray and Silver pretty well, at least in terms of their conflicting relationship. I also feel like they strengthened a bit of the OST in particular for some of the stages of the fight. Juvia's fight against that necromancer has a weird vibe to it as he knows some connections between himself and Silver. And anyways, that fight wasn't praise worthy at the moment. The Silver/Gray feud is nice though especially reflecting on some of their feelings. Dat iron ball.

Not a bad move by Gray there. Good last ditch effort that just worked well. He found a way to topple that Devil Slayer magic.
Well so it went from Silver being Deliora, to Silver being Silver....well there you go. No worries Ul, your victory is now back and secured. Goes back to making sense why you wouldn't have expected to see Deliora here. You'd have to think Tartaros would need to make certain measures to recover a defeated demon. Could be an issue of distance as well. Heck considering he seemed to be a mindless monster of destruction, Tartaros may not have even been all that connected to him. Either way can't wait for the story on Silver and why the heck he was doing all this. Presumably it's connected to that necromancer who likely revived him and has been using him. I'd guess this would make some sense if Silver was trying to push Gray to kill him and end his state of being a puppet. Certainly shows how far Natsu has to go. He is really taking his time against someone that Laxus obliterated in a couple minutes.

Lots and lots of foreshadowing.
Watching the Tartaros Arc after reading it in the manga, it struck me how obvious the fact that Silver wasn't Deliora was though. I remember finding the back and forth on this to be silly in the manga, so it goes without saying I found myself really liking it this time around. Next week can't come soon enough though. As good as the Silver/Gray fight was (And it was really good), the Juvia/Keyes fight is where its at. |

A part of me kind of wishes he really was Deliora who came back for revenge. But if that happened, we never would've gotten...well, what comes next. And what this means for Gray (and Juvia) in the long run.

Why do the most badass characters have to always exit early? Gildarts, not around. Jellal, off capturing some pokemon--I mean, the Oracion Seis. Laxus? Sidelined by inhaling poison. Silver? Just one big scheme to get to Gray and die, even though Silver is far more awesome.
