Hashire Melos! (走れメロス! Hashire Merosu!) aka Run Melos! films (1981, 1992)

The short story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run,_Melos! is mentioned ~3:45 into episode 18 of the anime series Hanada Shounen Shi, and it reminded me that this is something I hadn't gotten around to seeing, as it was one of the stories tracked by Anime Classic Reviews.

But no actual threads for discussing the anime, and it sounds interesting and well-referenced in Japanese culture and worth discussing.

The thing is that the ACR submission and tracker is for the 1992 movie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashire_Melos! mentions that there was a shorter movie prior to this (also animated) that came out in 1981. 68 as opposed to 107 minutes.

I'm wondering, has anyone had a chance to see either of them? I'm going to watch the 92 one soon since I have the ACR collection so far.

I watched the '92 one. It's pretty good and strikes me how this is not a popular title, as the animation themes, flow of the story are all very well made. I watched a poor VHS rip, but even then I could see how good the animation was.
