Her first solo mission. I was just as surprised as she was when Nanoha told us the news. Tomorrow, first thing, Subaru was going to be teleported to a planet to help guard a legal lost logia exchange. The logia were weak, nothing of any outstanding power, but still enough to have a bodyguard for...

And they chose her. Subaru. My partner.

I knew she was nervous. Others couldn't tell, but I could. The way she was eating, the way she talked, the laugh that fooled even Nanoha and Fate... I could see the difference. She was my partner after all.

Training was hard for me, a rare treat with a sparing match against Fate. Subaru was sitting on the edge of the training field talking to Nanoha, probably going over her responsibilities. Her posture was wrong, slightly leaning... I could tell, even if others couldn't. She was my partner after all.

That night we all took a bath together. All of us save for Elio, were in the large bath relaxing and talking casually. She was talking the most, making jokes about how we would be lost without her for the day. Her smile wasn't full, her eyes were scared... Even if they couldn't tell, even if people would say I was paranoid, I saw it. She was my room mate, after all.

Now we sat in our room, finishing the day's business and talking to each other. She was on her bed, rubbing her hands together in the day's first open display of nervousness. I debated if I should scold her, to act tough like always and make her feel at ease, but for some reason the words wouldn't come. I knew what she needed right now. I was her best friend, after all.

Sitting beside her, I put my arms around her shoulders and simply pulled her close. The motion worked and I could feel her ease up immediately. Slowly I leaned us back and claimed my place on top of her, looking into a curious face that no longer stressed about her mission. I didn't have to say anything. She knew what my actions were for. An unspoken display of support, lowering all my defenses that keep me proud, strong, and hard headed. I showed her with just that look that I believed in her. She was my girlfriend, after all.

Her hands slowly came up to embrace my face, pulling my down to touch her lips to mine. "Tia," the name was said gently. "Thank you."

I ran my hand along her cheek, slowly rubbing it with my thumb. She knew I was aware of how she was feeling, and right now her nervousness was gone. Instead I saw kind caring eyes looking up at me with a fondness that I was sure no one else could ever hope to see. Our lips met once again and we embraced.

We were lovers, after all.

A satisfied grin surfaced on Erio's mouth. The day had been just as he wanted. Nothing special had happened and even the usually bothersome clinging Caro did felt nice. It was one of those rare days where they had chance to use the money they earned and let loose from the job. Despite of the upcoming mission, they were able to relax.

It was suprisingly hot day and they were licking their third set of ice cream. Erio sat on the bench next to Caro after handing her ice cream.

”Don't you wish there were more days like this?” He closed his eyes and sank in the wooden bench.

”Humum.” Caro nodded, licking a strawberry flavored ball. ”But not too much. I don't want to get lazy.”

”I don't think we'll get another vacation in a long time.” Erio joked and began nibbling his ice cream.

Caro let out an satisfied chuckle before continuing her licking.

The park wasn't as silent as you would like it to be but it didn't matter. The chatter was comforting for those silent times when there was nothing to say.

”Want to go watch a movie?” Erio suggested, finishing his waffle.

”Yea.” Caro smiled and accelerated her licking.

”You can eat that on the way.” Erio rose up, closely followed by Caro.

”I want my arms free.” She answered and chucked the rest of her waffle in her mouth before grabbing Erio's arm.

”I see.” Erio scratched his head with his vacant arm and began walking towards the city center. They talked about current issues. Fate, new squad, movie preferances and future. They got many smiling looks at their way as they roamed in the crowded streets. ”How about that?” He pointed at the new movie board.

”I don't mind.” Caro leaned to his shoulder cheerfully.

”You should. If it's boring we won't go there.” Erio scolded.

”I think I will enjoy it.” Caro turned to Erio, showing a happy smile.

”Alright, could you buy the tickets, I'll go get some snack.” Erio widged out of the hold and left with a wave.

At the stand he was greeted by a long line. Obediently he stood at the end.

”Ah, the kid.” A blond woman noticed, carrying a giant bucket of popcorn.

”Jump kick woman.” Erio tilted his head.

”I just felt like it.” The woman fidgeted her long ponytail over her shoulder. ”I'm glad you survived.” She stated with a joyful smile.

”I'm surprised myself. You threw me out from 32nd floor.” Erio smirked and caused few eavesdroppers turn.

”Ehm...” The blond coughed and pulled Erio out of the line. ”Ungraceful.” She looked down on the boy with cold glare.

”Well I guess that was the best option I had...” Erio turned his gaze at the floor. ”But seriously, path of souls? Were you seriously trying to save me.” He added and lifted his eyes back at the woman.

”You would be a good boy without that last comment of yours.” She pat Erio's head and handed the bucket over to him. ”Sorry for dragging you from the line.” She waved and walked towards the front exit.

”Looking for Same, Lucine-san?” The blond woman stopped.

”Kids these days.” Lucine turned with a low kick. ”Yes I am.” She stated, holding her hands behind her back.

”There's a big blue building on the western shore of the lake. He lives there.” Erio nodded towards the lake.

”You were a good kid after all.” Lucine smiled and turned again. ”I shall repay this.” She promised and hopped away happily.

Smiling at himself, Erio walked at the ticket stand where Caro was waiting with two tickets in her hand. ”Sorry to make you wait.” He announced and the girl quickly ran over to him.

”I don't mind.” Caro moved to his side and the two entered the line.

”I allow myself to be weak for now...” The small girl ran wobbly towards the room of help. With uneven steps, she jumped up the stairs as fast as she could.

”Fate-san.” She opened the door and searched the room desperately.

”Lanlai, good day.” Nanoha waved from under the blanket.

”Ah, sorry.” Lanlai hid her wounded self and stood straight despite her tiredness. ”I'll come back later.” She waved at the two woman.

”Lanlai.” Fate called for the girl and snuggled out from the couch. ”You don't need to hide it from Nanoha.” She walked closer to the stopped girl.

”Hide what?” Nanoha moved her eyes between the two.

”Nothing, Nanoha-san. Sorry to disturb you.” Lanlai bowed and left the room. ”Damn that Fate!”

”Lanlai.” Fate caught the girl's arm. ”Didn't I say that we all are here for you?” She was dragged by the girl around the corridors, half naked.

”First it's Nanoha-san, then somebody else, and before you know it, everybody will know.” Lanlai shook Fate's hand away. ”Sorry to bother you, please let me know when you're available.” She bowed again quickly before running away.

”Lanlai!” Fate screamed.

”What was that?” Nanoha asked, peeking from the door.

”Lanlai is supressing all that pain she got from the gem release inside her.” Fate ran back to the room and began dressing. ”Do not tell even her about this or she will never trust me again.” She warned.

”I know when to keep a secret.” Nanoha pouted and jumped into a pair of jeans. ”Lets say I demanded to help you find her.” She smiled and grabbed a white T-shirt on her way out.

”Thanks.” Fate thanked with a worried face. ”Call me if you find her.” She ordered before vanishing to the stairs.

”Alright, boss.” Nanoha ran in the opposite direction.

”Stop being such an idiot Lanlai.” Fate finished the stairs with dangerous speed and rushed to the forward quaters, ignoring all questions thrown at her.

The room revealed a small girl shivering on the lower bed.

”I hope you didn't make time for me. I can manage few hours.” Lanlai lifted her face from the white pillow.

”Why can't you trust Nanoha or anybody else?” Fate crouched next to the bed.

”Trust isn't the issue. I don't want to trouble them.” Lanlai lifted herself into sitting position. ”Sorry for troubling you.” She mumbled onto the pillow in her lap.

”We have very much free time. You can bother us anytime.” Fate smiled at the sobbing girl.

”Then there's that another thing.” Lanlai squeezed her pillow anxiously. ”I don't want pity. You won't think I'm weak?” She looked up with teary eyes.

”We all have times when we need to rely on others.” Fate rose up just enough to sit on the bed. ”Besides, you could overwrestle both of us if you wanted to.” She smirked.

”Then,” Lanlai inhaled deeply. ”I shall take my mask off just for a bit.” She fell over into Fate's lap.

Nanoha ran throught the entire first floor before she made her way to the forward quaters.

”Linque-kun.” Nanoha slowed down as she saw a white haired man leaning on the wall next to an open door.

”Fate-san is good with children.” He stated and lifted his face towards the ceiling. ”Comforting words was all it took.” His mouth turned into satisfied grin.

”You're not going in?” Nanoha leaned next to him slightly uneasy because of the crying she heard from the room.

”I'd only make her mask herself again.” Linque pushed himself away from the wall. ”Sorry to ask you this, but please try to make it break complitely.” He gave a humble bow, even for this shameless man.

”That's what friends are for.” Nanoha winked and entered in the room.

”Good company indeed.” Linque brushed his watered eyes and turned away from the room. ”Very good company.” His satisfied grin was accompanied by a single tear.

Stress. It was one thing she was good at dealing with. From the deadlines of her paperwork to the inspections of her unit, to the knowledge that every mission she sent her team out on there was a chance one of her friends could die. Sometimes it was almost too much to handle, sometimes she had to escape from it to clear her head.

Now was one of those times. Hayate slowly snuck out of her room and closed the door without waking any of her guardians. Through the halls of section six she walked, making her way to the elevator and going to the floor where her two best friends stayed. They were for the night, on a mission. She half hated to make them go while Yuuno came to visit but the other half of her liked it.

The door was unlocked due to her rank and she stepped into the large loft style apartment. Yuuno was still awake, reading a book on the couch. His eyes glanced up when the sound came and stared at Hayate curiously. "Can't sleep?" He asked the obvious question and smiled when she brushed some hair behind her ear.

"Can't sleep." She replied softly, as if a loud voice would wake everyone. "You?"

"Lost track of time." He bookmarked his page and stood, walking over to the short girl. "What brings you here?"

"You," She whispered again, leaning forward and resting her head on his chest. "I need a friend."

"What for?" He hugged her when the girl's arms snaked around his waist.

"Just a hug." Her voice was muffled against his chest. "That's all I need."

Yuuno looked down at her and blinked when she pulled back enough to look up at him. "You look like you need more than a hug. Have you been sleeping okay?"

The girl rubbed her eyes. "No, I haven't. I don't think I've got but a few hours the last few nights." To her amazement she found herself being scooped up and carried. "What?"

"I'm taking you to bed," He told her simply. The male laid her down on Nanoha and Fate's bed gently. "I'm sure they won't mind if you sleep here."

Hayate placed her hand around the back of Yuuno's neck and pulled him back down when he tried to move away. "Yuuno? Stay with me?"

It was no secret that the two liked each other, a fact that they denied constantly. Saying they were nothing more than friends, saying they were best buddies, saying that it would never work out anyway...

"Sure," Yuuno allowed her to pull him ontop of her, gazed into her eyes shining in the moonlight.

Hayate didn't think about it anymore. Her eyes fluttered close, pulling him down to talk against his lips. "Yuuno," The name was lost in his mouth. "Will you make love with me?"

"If you stay all night," He counter whispered, getting a soft kiss. Arms went around his back, holding him close.

"Be gentle..."

"Always..." Each of their hands saught the other and fingers interlaced. "Hayate..."

"I know," She whispered to him, tears forming in her eyes. "You too... So much. It hurts to keep it inside sometimes..."

"Then no more..." Her kissed away her tear and met her mouth again. "Be mine?"

"I already am." The two held each other firmly, whispering words of love in the night.
