I think the main reason that the Destroids weren't used in episode 1 at least was because the director still wanted to highlight the entrance of the new VF-25's. It would be the first time we see Alto come in contact with a mecha, and possibly his future one. So sticking in some random humanoid destroids in the city would force the valkryie entrance spotlight to be shared.

For die hard fans you may have noticed all the obscure ref's to other macross series in this episode.

1). Sheryl Norme starts her concert by saying "Listen to my song!", this is what Basara would say before he sang.
2). The female Lt. who escorts Sheryl Norme is a Misa Hayase look alike.
3). The Chinese restaurant is decorated exactly like the "Little White Dragon" (The restaurant from SDF Macross that Minmai worked at.
4) Luka's phone is a play on Mylene Jenius's pet... the little tibble thing she had.
5) When the episode ends with Alto in Gerwalk posed as he was and the enemy posed is a play on Hikaru's first close encounter with the Zentradai in SDF Macross.

6. Michael's Group do 'hand flying' just like how Isamu did in Macross Plus

7. Vending machine wanders around and bugs people to buy juice. That's from the original series.
8. The trash robot pushing the cans into the garbage disposal also is from Macross Do You Remember Love? like first 3minutes into the movie.

As for Sheryl... it seems a bit early to speculate on her motivations. All we know about her right now is that she's not inclined to play the hero. She gives the impression of having become rather world-weary and cynical, as opposed to being simply outright selfish; the contrast with Alto's more idealistic outlook is sharp. It'll be interesting to see where she goes from here.
The way I see it, Sheryl gives the image that she's an anti-Minmei in different sense. She's not a bad woman. She's enthusiastic and proud about her job and responsibility, professional, clear-headed and takes it seriously like a strong career woman. But at the same time, she's a realist, and naturally doesn't want to put herself in places not of her concern and values her own safety, rather than trying to do typical shonen bravados or say "LISTEN TO MY SONG" in front of the alien, or thinking her song can stop wars and change people's future, stuff like that.

Yup, the trash robots! I loved those things.

Overall, this is a great first ep. Enough cool graphics to draw in the newbs and enough nostalgia to draw in old diehard fans. The mech designs are fabulous but I dunno what to make of the alien enemies, yet. I certainly hope they have some "character" like they did in the first series. It's far too easy to just have some mute, bloodthirsty aliens hell-bent on destroying humans.

The funny thing is that Sheryl looks like Lacus and we all know that Lacus most definitely was derived from the diva-heroines of Macross lore.

It's doubtful she'll remain in the dark of the situation since it's tradition for them to be involved, sometimes being crucial to the fight.

It's strange seeing two tsundere in the lead. Sheryl and Alto.

I think the mute, bloodthirsty alien thing is a bit fresh now after all these gray-area villains and organizations in mecha. No doubt they'll have some sort of a face. Hopefully not too many though. If the enemy really are a bunch of bugs, I suspect a Borg-style representation by a few sentient leaders.

After decades you'd think they would implement pin point barrier system for mecha mass production.

Heh must be expensive.

But it seems maximum coverage shielding for the dome is a reality. (Sealing the hole)

Seems Shoji Kawamori prefers alien lifeforms to be gigantic size.

if the enemy again is part machine and borg like isn't that much like the zentradi again?

It's interesting that it seems like the Frontier government already is aware of this extra-terrestrial threat. Maybe from Zentradi databases or connections with the bird man from Zero?

Personally, I predict that that role would mainly be Ranka's, but we'll see. That'll mostly depend on how they're going with the plot. Based of the writer's track record, I think it's going to be Macross in School for a while before the shit hit the fans.

You mean the Protoculture dooms day "kill switch" for humanity just in case they became agressive?

Well the new enemy may be another legacy of the Protoculture.

Zentradi, Protodevlin/Supervision army, the bird man man they left a lot of mess.

The only thing we haven't met are the Protoculture themselves.

We do know they once split into two factions till the Protodevlin arrived.

But as mentioned before in this thread the Frontier colony is going where Megaroad 1, Hayase's ship disappeared to.

The galactic core region.

Perhaps the circumstances behind it's disappearance was hidden from public by the higher ups.

Going by what we've seen by both characters, i wouldn't say they have tsundere qualities. Not yet anyway.

I think Knuckles was talking about her in-show presence, (( extremely popular, seems to have connections beyond just a singer, etc )) but yeah, I'll agree on the Kihel part at least. She also gives out the same vibe, imo.

I don't think both of them are at this point, tsunderes. Alto might have a little bit of a priority, image-complex and self-gratification problem (( he seems to be the most talented or so it seems, but due to being bored of his current state, he doesn't put in the effort, settles for no.2, etc not trying to make the best of his present for his future )), but otherwise he seems genuinely a good guy.

Yeah, he has shown anger from being call 'Princess' or anything related to female, though i think that has something more to do with just not liking the fact that people see him as female. Though i guess that all depends on where the show goes in future episodes. No tsundere aspects at all, and the same imo for Sheryl.

There's almost no similarity between Lacus and what little we've seen of Sheryl so far, beyond the fact that they're both singers. There doesn't seem to be much cause for comparing them.

Ai, Oboete Imasu Ka is sung by Nakajima Megumi, the voice actress of Ranka Lee, and it's the only song that she sang so far. Moreover, the whole song has only a single line of (rather well-pronounced) English. If you don't like the Sheryl Nome songs, that's a different story.

It's got nothing to do with practicality - I just find some of the Destroids to be even more iconic than the Valkyries, and I want to see what updated versions would look like.

Do You Remember Love is one of my favorite anime movies, but it doesn't really work that well for someone who isn't already familiar with the storyline. Macross 7 works much better as a standalone, but it feels very different from any of the other works; hence it probably doesn't work as well as an introduction into the franchise. Obviously, the original SDF Macross is the best place to start, but it's quite long and quite old. The graphics aged better than most of the shows of that era, but they'll probably still turn many newer viewers off.

It already is. As a part of Robotech, Macross is one of the most famous historic anime in the West (particularly North America).

There weren't a whole lot of Destroids in Macross 7 either, so I get teh feeling that we won't be seeing them at all. It doesn't really matter that much since the Macross franchise has always been much more interested in the characters than the war machines.

What's sort of nice about these homages is that they're not intrusive, so it's not too important if one catches them.

Ranka's restaurant is "Nyan Nyan", just like Minmei's restaurant. It's probably the most famous restaurant in the Macross universe, so it's not surprising to see a replica built in other locations.

They did. You can clearly see it being used by some of the Valkyries in Macross 7.

Macross 7 first ep or the first ep Macross 7 Encore I think.

Four years after it's launch in 2012.

Since the expedition disappeared with Hayase, Hikaru and Minmay it's a plot hole in Macross 7.

I remember the gossip ep of Macross 7 where it was rumored that Nikki Basara was in fact the illegitimate son of Hikaru and Minmay. Funny

Spoiler for image SDF-2 Megaroad-01:

Shown in Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012
OVA of Macross songs with epilouge footage.
Basically Minmay's last concert as they leave Earth.

Now what is so significant about where Macross Frontier is that it is where Megaroad-01 was lost.

Megaroad-01 lost all communication with Earth after four years since it's maiden flight.

first, about the destroy, the story line says the UN stop the production of destroys in the 2020, so no more destroys in combat.

Second, Macross II is a paralael Universe.

Third, newbe or not you must watch the first series is priceless and then DYRL.
