No one knows. Not the audience, not the (other) characters, possibly not even the author. It is deliberately left unclear. The author may reveal it later, but there's also the possibility of the series ending without an answer (as in, they have obligation to answer in the series).

If a Weapon nature is something that is inherited, then quite possibly genetics is the deciding factor. Not both of Maka's parents are Weapons, just Spirit.

Well there is also a possibility that its something that has to be trained or unlocked somehow.

We don't really know for sure, they don't seem to have been very clear on that.

Her(?) gender is pretty hard to call. The name Chrona is the female version of the Greek name Chronos. But Chrona also uses a very male version of I that females rarely use. Raganarock does think that lifting Chrona's robe is a good way to bug the child and Chrona reacts a bit more like a female would then. My geuss is we won't find out untill the mandatory beach ep, but then Chrona would likey show up in a wet suit.

just who/what exactly is the red demon inside soul's head? i know that has to do w/ the black bood invading his system, but i need an exact answer.

Other than the black blood issue, there is none at the moment. It represents his darker desires for power (which so far he's managed to turn kind of to his own advantage, good man), but IIRC we've not been shown anything more concrete about the little demon.

I think it has something to do with insanity, the black blood may be the manifestation of insanity which is why it reacts the way it does to:

To the wavelength of insanity cos since the Kishin was released the demon in Soul's head appeared more and more.

Also on the point of why isn't Maka a weapon I agree it may just be due to genetics, some people may just have the weapon gene as the prominent gene which is why they are weapons but if it is not it may just be that the child will become a meister to that weapon which is why Maka uses a scythe. Or maybe it just has to do with the soul itself.
