I second this. I'm watching Seirei no Moribito at the moment, and it is a gorgeous show.
Another is probably Inuyasha. I mean, they're outside all the time. Er, I'm having trouble thinking of others.... let me get back to you on that one.

Mushishi was a beautiful, and rather unique series. It'll be difficult to find anything with that kind of feel, but for things that aren't set in built up areas... hmm.
Lamune comes to mind. It's set in a small town on the coast. Also a slow relaxing slice of life series. Lots of pretty scenery. Claymore was mostly in the country, not towns or cities. A relative gorefest, though. Hard to say others that predominantly feature it though. Plenty of series have nice country scenes, but for primarily taking place outside of cities of larger towns... tough call. >.< |

Zettai Shounen, first half is set in a very small farming town.
Slayers. For the most part, they wander around the countryside. Princess Mononoke. Moyashimon is set in a college, but it is an agricultural college with cows, crop fields, and so forth. Higurashi is set in a very small town. Otogi-Jushi Akazukin, like Slayers, mostly consists of wandering around the countryside. There are towns, but not big ones. The Twelve Kingdoms has a lot of wilderness and small towns, though it also has some cities. However, the cities are medieval and small. Juuousei is predominantly wilderness, aside from a couple episodes. I have only seen one episode (and didn't like it), but I'm pretty sure Uninhabited Planet Survive qualifies. |

I thought about Claymore, and it's certainly doesn't take place completely in the country, so if that counts, go for it, since it's a great anime. I wouldn't really recommend InuYasha, since if you had Mushishi in mind, they're both completely different. Spice and Wolf, on the other hand, I second.

I'd suggest Quiet Country Cafe. Amazing backgrounds, awful plot, but thankfully it's just two ovas.
I'll second Zettia Shonen, at least the first season is very rural, though the second season is back to city fare. It's slow by anime standards though. Haibane Renmei has a great, country side feel, complete with windmills. |

Samurai Champloo might be alright. Trio travelling across Japan in a historic type setting. It's comedy/action. A fair bit of countryside in it, too. Though on about the same level as Claymore, I think. More picturesque though. Definitely more effort put in to the background art.

The first thing that came to mind when reading this is all of the historical anime I've seen recently - historical meaning takes place in the 1800s and seems British in nature.
Emily of New Moon and Trapp Family Story are examples. Goshu the Cellist takes place in a countryside village, as does a lot of Violinist of Hameln. There really are a ton of anime that fit this category. *thinks she'll make a tag in the database for "countryside" now* |

Fifth Spice and Wolf.
I love the idea of incorporating trading/bartering into anime (economics? ) Something fresh I would also suggest Utawarerumono. This anime is not modernized, and since it is set in the olden days, villages, wheat fields and castles are common sights. Samurai Deeper kyo has settings similar to Utawarerumono. Second H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~.

I-d like to second Figure 17. Really, this series is seriously underappreciated. Just because it aired before the age of torrents doesn't mean it deserves this much neglect
The more recent and last season's Mokke also develops on the country side. Count me as another Zettai Shounen supporter as well.
