DVD Burners- help please!

Can anyone tell me about DVD burners? We just got one, but I don't think it's working the way it's supposed to. For one thing, I tried to put a video on it and it said that it was too big and the quality would have to be reduced for it to fit. But that video fit on a normal Cd-R with room to spare, so it certainly should have fit on a DVD! Those things are supposed to hold over 4 gigs! For another thing, when I started the burning, it said it was going to take 11 hours! That's just insane! This isn't how it's supposed to be, is it? I can't imagine anyone actually WANTING a DVD burner if they have to wait 11 hours to burn a DVD that can't even hold as much as a normal Cd-R... Can anyone help me out?

Can you supply more info? What brand and model burner and what software are you using to burn and what version?

I've never had a problem burning to DVD yet, it works as it should and I've burned hundreds of data and anime dvd's.

The brand is Pacific Digital and it's a 4x dual format burner. The program I'm using is Nero StartSmart. Hopefully that's the info you wanted. I'm pretty impared when it comes to technology. And thank you for making an effort to help me out!
