Fansubs on PS3-- good idea?

You could always re-encode the fansubs to something a PS3 can play natively. Of course it's time-consuming, but not that difficult. If you need to take fansubs from a computer and play them in a location where you have to rely on something like a PS3 (such as the club), it could be an option.

You either burn the re-encoded files to DVD or transfer them via network or flash drive to the PS3.

That is also the same for stand alone blu-ray players since encoding with the correct codec (h264 would be a good option for this) and putting everything in the correct container would remove any unplayable format issues.

putting together a machine capable of playing 720p hi10p should really not be all that hard given that budget, at least if you disregard the monitor
