Grats to Rem and Planetarian. I'm going to call 2016 "Year of the Blue Hair" Also greats to Kumiko and Asuka for making it as close as possible.

Also I really need to get caught up on Gundam.

Yep, Re: Zero (& Planetarian) dominates. Saw it from miles away. Oh, and Konosuba, Macross Δ & YoI being the obvious champions in their categories. And I’m glad that Rakugo, Bokumachi, Euphonium, Flip Flappers & Shirayuki actually won something and Yakumo being best male lead.

I think the only nominees who are underrated in this award is Ikta Solork from Alderamin for best male lead (even though I’m glad that Yakumo won) and Gundam: The Origin for best on-going series. Ikta & young Char really need more love and recognition. Also, I’m actually surprised that Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans & Gundam Thunderbolt are as popular as they are since the combination of “mecha + Gundam + grim & depressing story” usually scares people away. I’m glad that IBO is more-or-less a close-second in every nomination that it’s in (best sci-fi, best credits, best on-going series).

All that said, generally speaking, the results of this award is actually pretty good.

Yes, you do. We have three Gundams on-going since 2016 (IBO, Origin, Thunderbolt) and they’re all good so far (if not great).

Our Subaru, who art in Rebirth, hallowed be thy name, thy Lucigina come, thy redo done, on Earth as it is in isekai.
Give us this day our daily Rem, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who love Emilia. And lead us not into Satella, but deliver us from Betelgeuse, amen

She's the best support lead character, of course. or lead support.

It's obviously that she got stuck in not main character, because she's a girl, and triggered!!!!

Excellent winner list, in my opinion. With maybe a couple exceptions, it nicely reflects the diversity of anime taste that you can find here on Anime Suki.

At a personal level, I'm most happy about Best Romance, Best Sci-Fi, Best Slice of Life, Best TV Series, Best Soundtrack, and the character awards. I might have liked if Flip Flappers had won a little bit more, but at least it didn't go home empty-handed.

And big congrats to clearly the most popular anime character of 2016 - Rem!

Thank you! Felix put amazing work into all of the banner creation, and Haak did tremendous organizational work. A big thanks to both of them for keeping these awards chugging along very nicely.

Irrespective of what you think of the character, it's ludicrous to let the same one be nominated as both lead and supporting. They're one or the other, period. But I know that argument has already been beaten to death, so whatever...

It wasn't clear to people what she was, and she did serve both roles throughout the series. What's the alternative? She did receive her votes fairly and Asuki has never dictated which characters are mains and which are sides, so it's left to each voters digression.

Indeed. That's how I ended up nominating Another back then as a comedy, even though it really isn't labeled as such.

Note that most people didn't double vote Rem, so Rem was actually at a handicap because her fanbase is split. This way, at least it was more competitive.

Maybe you're right. You're certainly not the only person to make this argument.

I don't speak for Haak or felix, but it's something I'll probably discuss with them for next year. Because it is possible that this could happen again in the future, particularly with, say, a popular all-girls ensemble show that really blurs the line between female lead and side-character.

But it's also precisely for that reason that I'm curious to know where people here draw the line between "lead character" and "side-character".

Take the cast of some idol/music band anime, for example. They tend to have a "first among equals" character, and I think it's fairly easy to consider that particular character a female lead, but what about the rest? Are Eli Ayase and Ritsu Tainaka and Chihaya Kisaragi "side-characters"?

And even in the case of Rem, she probably is the female character that has the highest total amount of screen-time in the Re:Zero anime to date. She feels like a Female Lead to me, even if Emilia is the presumptive main heroine.

"Each show has only one female lead and one male lead. All others are side-characters." (Not saying you'd necessarily state this yourself - just voicing what's probably the simplest possible answer here)

Ok... so who's the female lead in Fate/Stay Night? In White Album 2? In True Tears? In Tari Tari? There's definitely going to be some serious edge-cases.

Not the least bit surprised that Rem won her categories. It really was the year of Rem.

I'm satisfied when it comes to the genre categories. Konosuba, Yuri on Ice, and Flying Witch easily deserved their victories. Overall it's a pretty good selection of winners.

Shirayuki, Flip Flappers, Planetarian, Flying Witch and Macross Delta. Happy to see these get an award!
While I didn't vote for Yuri on Ice. I felt it was definitely deserved.

Here's a way of looking at things that might help...

Rem gets Best Female Lead for Re:Zero's 2nd major arc, and Rem gets Best Side-Character for Re:Zero's 3rd major arc. Rem is easily the most important female character in the 2nd major arc. Emilia arguably edges out Rem for most important female character in the 3rd major arc.

As a point of comparison, think of an omnibus-style VN adaptation (Amagami in particular is a great example of this). For each route adaption, for each arc, you have a different female lead. And that same character is a side-character in the other arcs.

That's the conclusion I made to justify voting for her in both categories. I was going to do it regardless, but still...

Well, not too bad I guess

At least it ain't like a certain award which had the fujoshi ruining it(No offense but it looks like it that way).
