So Satoru couldn't get Saki so instead stole Shun away? And Saki couldn't get Shun so got it on with Maria instead? Ouch.... XD

Must say though, I'm most impressed with Mamoru. Unlike the others, he has an unflinching devotion to Maria that never seem to have wavered. Might he be her servant of death once Maria turns to the dark side, or would he be the one seeking to redeem her? Can't wait for his role in all this mess.

Oh yeah, the art is goddamn terrible this episode. Sometimes I couldn't even recognize the main cast.

Episode shocked me more than expected, but not for the reasons I was expecting. I really did not see that first half of the episode coming.

people need to realise that they are 14 now, right in the middle of puberty. The power of hormones is strong. What surprises me is that the whole school seem to be in homosexual relationship. Is the heterosexual one banned in that society at a young age or something? Or is it just pure coincidence?

Going on to the second half of the episode, I felt like once again more question is being asked, especially that particular scene. Most likely next episode will dive into the secret of the society once more, especially more focus onto the banishment system which was put to the backburner in the previous arc. There's just so much stuff going on at the moment it's amazing, chances are I will probably marathon this whole series again once it finishes.

I do agree with the inconsistency of the art quality in this episode. It seems like they ran out of budget after 4 episodes. Some key frames still looks good, but overall it's quite sloppy.

Since Saki and Maria are my two favorite characters, this episode was a treat

Remember that they have a breeding programme in place so they have to suppress uncontrolled heterosexual relationships at this stage in their life, but you can't just force the teens to bottle up all that hormone so the homo part is a compensation.

The inconsistent animation/drawing quality within the same episode is something I notice a lot on this series. It's not like they have run out of budget since even the recent episodes feature some pretty good animation (today's episode included). It's just that, while other series tend to have episodes that look either good or bad, this series seems to mix good animators with bad ones on the same episodes quite often.

This is absolutely terrible, suddenly everyone is falling apart and turning homosexual. I needed more build up before they sprung this on me.

Well, imo the only real homosexual is Maria, who seems to have unrequited feelings for Saki. Everyone else, including Saki, seems to be playing at being homosexual (unconsciously, of course). All those "couples" seem so fake it's not even funny.

I suppose their society encourages homosexual behavior as breeding control.

It's just sex, and they're teens with raging hormones. I believe some people won't take kindly to people saying it's not "real" homosexuality, as though it were possible to make such a distinction...

Animation issues aside, the story takes a rather surprising turn this episode. If Shun is correct that they have been under surveillance since their return from the wilds, it makes one wonder why the children have been spared.

Also, it's remarkable that Shun is apparently able to shape living things at a genetic level. If it were not for his increasingly unstable mental condition, he would likely not have created a monster out of the chick embryo.

Which in turn makes me wonder if that is a hint about the origins of the bakenezumi. That is, they were the failed experiments of PK users like Shun.

Finally!!! an episode that did away with all the understandably delicate presentation crap... it would be a 10/10, since I have not watched such attention-gripping developments since Koi Kaze, Texhnolyze, Laine, even Ima Shoko ni iru Boku ages ago, but the animation and character designs do the plot no justice... and I don't even want to get started on the overall presentation thus far... a lot might get surprised, even shocked, but should they have paid attention all these stuff were coming!

i.e. manga character development and plot (vol.1) >>>>> anime's (ep.1-7)... I hope the staff got their lesson

PS: Poor Mamoru, I will cheer for you, even when you inevitably snap

PS2: Now, I can also see how Maria will fulfill Saki's ominous narration at the end of ep.3

PS2.5: Please don't PM me spoilers about Maria/Mamoru, because it get's increasingly more difficult not to click that spoiler button

PS3: And referring to the first couple of episodes, I wonder if Satoru will become the victim of the "karma demon" in an effort to "save" his favorite plaything.

PS3.5: VA change was really lame... blatant attempt from an incompetent writer that would be better off working in shows for kids and their parents!

That was an interesting development. We got a fine mix of gay and lesbians in a single episode. Fascinating.

The animation quality is terrible. Maybe, the animators didn't like this episode themselves.

How is encouraging homosexual behavior going to solve anything?

Love, jealousy, or cheating can happen in any relationships, whether it is homosexual or straight.

If they were to all turned homo, wouldn't that lead to extinction.

I have nothing against gays. I'm talking about this series only.

I dunno, I think Satoru could have been serious about the relationship (at least it seemed like it to me), though we never did get much build up towards this so it's hard to say unless the novel did/does address this at some point. Not to mention we did get a two year time skip, so anything could've happened. I'd say the relationship web implied from this episode would be:

Satoru's bitch Rei > Satoru > Shun >< Saki < Maria < Mamoru

Though I'd like to think that Shun also had reciprocal feelings towards Satoru but liked Saki more. At the moment I don't really see Saki and Satoru having actual romantic feelings for each other or at least are unaware of it (Bonobo time @ queerat hotel doesn't count imo). Of course, there's still plenty of time for that to change, especially since Shun's death flag is fluttering high in the sky right now.

Which of course, brings us to what should be the actual main topic at hand: Shun's impending doom and why they've been spared all this time if his warning is true.

I'm pretty sure that once past the age restriction they don't have to settle only for same sex relationship.

Also, can anyone explain what's with those 3 floating balls Shun is using at the end of the episode? Does it create a barrier or detection field or something?

I think so too. They probably actively encourage this to prevent an upwards spike in teen mums at that age.

As for the balls, I think it was Shun's way of openly saying he doesn't want anyone to come close to him but then he let his dog inside so I'm not sure.

I am certain you got this (or the writer misled you into getting this) totally wrong

I am with you on this bro, I am certain Maria will lament not paying attention to the only person that really loved her

Yeah, they should have picked a more daring studio, that is not pledged with conservative n00bs

I guess this is the point in time when you rethink what you have read

I don't really understand why most posts center around gays here... to my understanding these configurations serve the original plot... even in the anime they showed that sexual intercourse (independent of sex) is an uninhibited function in their society (unlike more human ones since the Dark Ages), whether it is homo or hetero... nothing more, nothing less

I am inclined to totally agree here, the writer's leeches should have chosen a studio untainted by NoitaminA

Birth-control, STD-reduction, overwriting antique natural impulses, etc.

You have nothing against gays as long as they are not close to you even when measuring your screen's proximity

age restrictions (anime-wise) liberated the staff from depicting sexual attraction in general, not only homosexual (consider poor Mamoru and Saki, as well as the rest of the kids)... they have skipped some material already, which confuses many anime-only viewers.

The thing is that they don't seem to think it's just sex. Saki used the term "koibito" which implies they think there's more than sex to these "relationships". But to me that doesn't seem to be the case. The way Satoru just got a new "koibito" after Shun dumped him, and how Saki played along when Maria mentioned they'd be together forever even though she obviously doesn't mean it... like I said, it seems like they're role playing or something.

Only Maria's feeling for Saki, Mamoru's feelings for Maria, and Saki and Shun's mutual feelings seem to be beyond this role play imo.

Well, this is just the feeling I got.
