Konata basically plays free-for-play Korean MMO's [or MMO's of a similar style]. They have no fee for play but are often composed of long periods of grinding EXP points and buying special items with real-world money or product promotions. This can be seen in the OVA with the "Pizza-La Shield" that Kuroi uses.

I just saw the opening for Lucky Star translated by WinD, and I'm pretty surprised at how different the translation came out. The one by A.F.K seems way too fast and didn't make sense at all, while the one by WinD was awesome and makes the OPing more funnier/enjoyable when you actually understand it.

Just wondering if A.F.K is as off in their translation as they are on their OPing? Maybe A.F.K is correct but WinD alter the OPing to make it more understandable..? Oh and how would you compare A.F.K to WinD in the shows translation? Is it completely different as well, like in the OPing?

[BTW: Not sure if it's "legal" to discuss fansubs translation. If not then I apologize and mods can delete this post]

well ... it all comes down to what school of translation your in ... if your translating literal or meaning ... both are equally right, from a strictly translating point of view but can end up very different ... specially a show such as LS is tricky to translate since it put a ton of its cargo on injokes which you almost have to be a native in the enviorment to catch, and is both using lots of jokes which is based on the literal view, and jokes which is based on the meaning behind the words.

AFK tends to go for the "we're localizing it for Americans" style. For some series that works very well (e.g. Shuffle!). For series steeped in japanese lore, culture, and trivia.... my personal opinion is that it works less well for anyone interested in those things. That said, they did a fair job with L*S series since I only pulled my hair out a few times. They're also very fast on the release which was important during the airing season.

WinD takes a lot of time on most of their series - speed is not a priority. The result tends to 'feel' more Japanese to me on average but then that's what I want in a sub.

I'm going to qualify: the two groups have simply tuned their "equalizer knobs" differently. I don't want a completely literal translation because so much is left implied in Japanese that needs to be spelled out in English. The team has to make judgement calls on when those "extra pieces" are needed. I'm more okay with footnotes than some when proverbs or puns that only work in Japanese are used. If you read the footnotes in some manga (e.g. Negima with "onion boy") the translators will describe the sorts of challenges they encounter.

If it sounds like I'm equivocating, I am. Both groups work pretty hard on their products. They have somewhat different philosophies in translation and different priorities about release speed. They're both pretty professional about their product. Which one I like depends on the series setting and content.

My real favorite L*S fansub (both series and OVA) in terms of balancing all the factors I care about is EnA, so obviously YMMV.

Yea, I've noticed in the other thread you were highly praising EnA's translation of LS. To be honest, you posts were the one that inspired me to dl EnA's LS. Aslo I've noticed that you were the only one talking about EnA's version. But so far I can't say I'm disappointed.

Also, thanks for the background info on A.F.K, and the other groups. Very informative about their style of translation .

Oh, and sorry mods for posting the translation thingy. My bad.

Q: In episode 6 , in the bath , konata start to play with her hair saying : "Timotei, Timotei, Timotei."

What does that mean? It's an old advertising about shampoo?

In volume 6 of the Lucky Star manga (chapter 184), Hiyori and Konata sees some of the girls as characters from Tsukihime. In order of Kagami, Konata, Minami, Tsukasa and Miyuki, which Tsukihime characters did they use?

How closely to the manga does the anime follow? And, if it follows closely, how manga manga volumes does the anime cover? Also, is the OVA based on manga chapters?

The anime is nearly the exact same as the manga as far as I know.

If my estimation is correct, one manga volume covers approximently 10 episodes (or at least the 1st volume covers 10 episodes). So in effect, the manga is probably longer than the anime. The manga rather has things that the anime doesn't cover, or covers a longer period of time.

As for the OVA, I'm not sure. Hope this helps.

Btw, yezhanquan, I thought there were only 4 volumes out right now?

Um... when the anime is using a sketch from the 4-koma manga, yes its almost identical.

But the anime drives into so many "anime-only" moments I can't sign up for "identical".
Besides the Kyo-ani pop culture reference insertions (e.g. Initial D, Haruhi), otaku store characters, and Lucky*Channel (all anime only) -- there's a few episodes that are anime-only though at least one was entirely written by the mangaka. Reading the manga will be a disconcerting surprise for those fans expecting tons of pop references and Anime Tenchou and Lucky*Channel.

There are six volumes of Lucky*Star 4-koma manga at present. Also a number of "other artists" short story collections and various doujinshi.
Volume 6: http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%89%E3...1445658&sr=8-7

All L*S products at amazon.co.jp: http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_ss?...2%BD&x=20&y=20

The volumes were averaging six months between releases but volume 6 arrived a year after volume 5.... don't know if we'll see a volume 7 or not but September would be the month to start scanning for it. Of course, one can wait for the english versions which started a few months ago( http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Luc...4961126/?itm=1)

Does anyone know which episode it was when Tsukasa had a brief daydream that she was actually the older twin? Too lazy to check the DVDs scene by scene....

Also btw what's the name of Minami's Mom? She looks exactly like her with 2 pin ornaments on her hair.
