Top: Kira Yamato - Gundam Seed / Seed Destiny
Bottom: Kubinashi - Nurarihyon no Mago

-----------------

lulzworthy list as always but nice to see Maya from Occult there.

Kira Yamoto from Gundam SEED/Destiny and Kubinashi from Nurarihyon no Mago.

I don't get why Kirino is so popular either. I suppose it's due more to her outer appearance than her personality.

Thank you very much imbehindyou and Kanon!
I'm actually a little surprised Edward Elric isn't on the OP's list, considering his popularity.

Well, it's Japan. No need to be worked up toward the polls, they could change fast. As we can see, different magazine give different results as well. Besides, popularity doesn't always equal to quality, does it?

Kirino is the 3rd? How the hell did that happen?! Are all Japanese masochists or something?

49 for Mashiro is a way too high place... 28 for Kirino too...
70 Haruhi, how in the world someone as selfish and spoiled can be so high? I will never understand Haruhi fans...
70 Lol Hitsugaya had fallen
Suprised that only Ed from FMA was included, there are a lot of much cooler characters than those that were mentioned here.
Otherwise nice ranking.

Interesting lists. Ika Musume would be my #1 MVP. That show would be nothing without her. And who voted for Yuki as gloomy? Yuki is not gloomy

This probably stems from Don't Say Lazy and the other ED songs.

She has no sense of reason and often leaves chaos in her wake.

I think maybe they mean "cool beauty"?

Only thing I can think of that would make sense

Something I find very, very odd...

Kanade is currently dominating ISML like nobody's business (last I checked anyway).

Yet she's nowhere to be found in that Top 100 list, or in any of this for that matter.

Just how is this possible?

Is the otaku community in Japan really this fragmented? Is there a huge division between magazine-reading otaku and ISML-voting otaku?

The top 100 list has a small sample pool of voters. Also I believe there are a lot of girls who vote which explains all the Inazuma 11, Gintama, Hakuouki, Hetalia, Durarara, Nurarihyon no Mago, Basara etc characters.

K-On was actually decently popular with girls.

It's simple. Newtype has a very specific demographic. As does Megami and Dengeki. There are plenty who don't read them for specific/demographic/content reasons. There are those who don't like polls because they consider them to be popularity based. And in all cases, they're only going to be a small subset that will hardly be indicative of the general anime community. They're only indicative of the consumers that purchase that magazine. Take it with a pinch of salt. You're bound to get far more accurate gauging from the sales of the manga, anime and merchandise themselves.

ISML is an international event (Japanese voters are a strong minority if even voting in any numbers at all). 2ch-Saimoe would give a clearer picture of Kanade's popularity with Japanese otaku. She made it till the third round in 2010, that edition was won by Azusa from k-on. We will just have to wait to see how strong Kanade this year is in 2ch Saimoe.

That's a very interesting question. I suspect there are several anime watching groups that partially overlap and form a sort of patchwork. If you look at the anime magazines in Japan they have their own demographic/niche. A competion about "moe"-ness will be dominated by bishoujo characters. More general popularity contests will see more varation in characters, where also characters from popular shonen titles and bishonen anime will have a chance.

This is a (non-exhaustive) list of anime magazines, I'm not familiar with all of them so if anyone is more certain about their demographic target feel free to add or correct to the list. Websites of retailers give conflicting information.

Animage: general anime magazine, mostly info on daytime anime and the more popular late night anime, all ages
Animage original: general anime aimed at older audience then animage.
Animedia: similar to animage
Dengeki G's magazine:bishoujo magazine, all ages?
Dengeki Girl's Style: bishonen for girls, shoujo?
Megami Magazine: bishoujo magazine for seinen demographic
New type: general anime like animage but more mecha centric
Nyantype: bishoujo magazine aimed at seinen audience
Pash!: anime/cultural and seiyuu magazine for women, josei?
Terebi-kun: Mostly tokusatsu but also some anime, aimed at kodomo/elementary school age

It gets even more complicated if you bring in games, hobby/figure and manga magazines who all overlap in content and fans with the anime magazines.

Oh! I had forgotten about that thread. All I have to say about the latest poll is: LOL Newtype. On second thoughts, I can't say I'm too surprsied. Shu and Inori have a few things in common with their beloved Jesus Yamato (he's still there!) and his queen after all.

I'm surprised no Aquarion EVOL characters are in there since it's a mecha show (at least from I can tell). There's a character in that series that seems pretty damn lovely too.
