Without insider information on Funi, I'd guess several reasons:

1. They had to clean up the legal issues with episode 17. [Recall there were some alledged copyright infringements at the time it aired in Japan.]

2. Funi just laid out a whole bunch of cash rescuing many of the Geneon and ADV titles. Much as we might think corporations are made of money, much of it is already committed to one project or another. Hence, with a big lump purchace of properties from other companies, Funi probably had to "rob Peter to pay Paul" somewhere--e.g., delaying "new" acquisitions in favor of the rescues.

3. They may have wanted to know when they were going to release the series before making the official announcement. [Admittedly, this hasn't always been the case with some series.]

Again without insider information, it may be that this is why we got the OVAs instead of a second season: Gonzo already knew it would be scaling back production.

Mind, there are other animation studios, and Gonzo was partnered with AIG. I've even seen some series change the look of the art when going from season 1 to season 2. So, I'd say if there's money to be made (and enough story), more OVAs or a second season aren't impossible.

[For that matter--why not a movie? Though from what I know of the story from the manga, I still think OVAs are more likely.]

great to see this fun series liscenced, I'm hoping another studio picks this up for a second season, because it has a lot more charm than stuff like nagasate airantou, and overall its a great relaxing anime that is blast to watch.

I'm glad it's licensed. This is one of the rare series I've found worth buying...

Now if only someone would license the manga, because the official release would probably quicker than the scanlations are...

Either I'm the only one who didn't like this show upon seeing it or the people who didn't like it are just staying hush...

But anyway, I first watched this show some time back and found that it was too over the top and not funny at all, but then again, there are other anime I didn't enjoy at first as well but gave second chances to and ended up loving (Toradora being an excellent example) so I thought I'd give this another shot. Unfortunately, as with my last attempt the show made my brain hurt. It was just painful.

I guess the thing that killed the show for me was the absolutely unbelievable setup and the constant facial exaggerations. It's not that I don't enjoy humor and funny anime faces, hell, I love anime that can make me laugh as much as anyone.. but you gotta keep things balanced.

agree
for a comedy themed anime i only laughed about 3 or 4 times in total and chuckled a few, and comedy is my favourite genre
oh well, its an avg anime and i would watch a second season if one came out

your entitled to your opinion but if you were expecting toradora in seto no hanayome then you are expecting the wrong thing. Although the first couple of episodes seem more drama oriented in the end its a comedy show where as toradora is a drama show disguised with the premise of comedy. Just look at kitamura angst scenes... quivers at the drama. Personally I though the over top ness is what made it great, instead of the reserved comedy some of the best scenes in this show are those hilarious misunderstandings, but then again its taste, but really the drama in toradora is probably as thick as s1 clannad.

Exactly, I enjoyed both. Seto for the OMG this is a funny but completely unrealistic show to Toradora for the OMG this is pretty good and funny too show.

Just watched the series and its funny as hell . Runa / Luna /Lunar is simply . Just love her two faced personality .
Ultimately my major gripe about the series is how the "villains" try to keep making the lead and setasan break up . Its done soooooo many times it eventually gets really boring .

Heh, well they have tried to outright KILL him, and it didn't work.
So breakup is their only option.

Except for the last one, all the villians were for comedy relief, Incho Jungle Girl did make me fall down laughing.

Just a question, I heard the manga has been finished? Is this true? Because when I go to certain manga sites, they say that the chapters are still "ongoing." What is the latest chapter released?

According to Wiki, it's still going on.
And no group really appears to devote themselves to this release. Owells I really want to know what happens after the anime.

A few bits of news and speculation . . .

For those who can make it (and/or care), the official web site indicates there will be an Seto no Hanayome "anniversary" event in Yokohama, Japan in January 2010. This is timed to promote the Blu Ray DVD release (in that country).

Meanwhile . . .

Last I heard from a Funimation online forum (posted late in October 2009), they were about 1/2 way through dubbing SnH into English. No release date yet, though, beyond "likely the first half of the year (2010)." Given that Funi's release schedule through February 2010 is already posted, the first half of SnH looks to be published in the US no sooner than March.

Regarding the manga: Since Gan Gan Wing is no longer published, the manga has moved to a new magazine. However, I've seen no sign of new manga compilations in over a year and a half; and I've heard of no new chapters. Rumor (at one point) was that the manga author had an unspecified injury to his/her drawing hand, so one would think it would be healed up by now . . . [If anyone knows more current information, I'd appreciate it.]

Anyhow . . . Speculations on the "delay" of the US release:

From Funimation's general comments, it looks like they've been trying to pace and time their releases to the health of the economy. (i.e., they don't want a show to "fail" just because it got released at a bad time.)

I mentioned in a previous post how episode 17 could be causing Funi problems (since that episode had alleged copyright problems in Japan). I've heard nothing either way on this.

I suppose Funi could be waiting on negotiations on the OVAs to conclude before pushing the DVDs out the door. (Again, I've heard nothing either way on this.)

Lastly . . . I've kind-of have to wonder if our current ever-evolving child porn laws are having some effect. After all, there are some scenes wherein one (or more) characters (incorrectly) assume sex between minors is happening . . . and, while "actual" or "simulated" sex isn't shown, the visuals alone could be . . . problematic(?) . . . in our current legal environment.

As such, I suppose the Funi lawyers could be advising delay of the release until the legal issues are resolved or reviewed.

Well, on this one issue in particular, I'm rather sure this isn't on the radar screen at all. There's no shortage of shows still be released and re-released that have a much larger amount of suggestive content. Besides, the whole context of the series is a comedy and "nothing actually happens", so there's nothing at all to fret about here. People aren't so worried about this that they're going to edit a direct-to-DVD niche-market anime to remove any hint of anything that might be falsely misconstrued; that sort of borders on paranoia.

Just started watching this and it's been a good adaptation so far. The only complain I have is that I really dislike Nagasumi's mother. The way she flirts with Masa in front of her husband and is basically about to cheat on him is wrong on so many levels. :\ Everything else is great, though.

Just finished this one, and I loved it. It was consistanly funny, and two episodes in particular had me in tears. The first one was episode 7. I loved Saru's absolutely insane reaction upon finding out that Runa was living with Nagasumi. It was freakin gold. The second of which is episode 20. Just the very concept of gang members acting like Galge girls is hilarious. Especially San's dad lol.

I also really liked San's chibi mode, because she said some really funny things that way. Another thing I really liked was the various facial expressions. Like how Nagasumi reacted when he saw Masa . In terms of characters, I liked San, Runa, Saru*, both of the gang dads, Masa, Fujishiro, and Ren.

Now on to the things I didn't like. I didn't like how Saru became Kai's servant. I didn't really like that role, which is why I put a "*" after his name. I also didn't like Maki at all. She was annoying as hell IMO and had no positive qualities. Another thing I didn't care too much about is the way that the family treated Nagasumi's dad. I felt really bad for him, and those scenes made me uncomfortable. Lastly, I didn't like how the last episode turned into a wanna-be action series. I didn't particularly like that.

Overall this was a really funny series. The positives outweighed the negatives, and I really enjoyed it. I give it an 8/10.
