Anyway, I tend to find the language in novels translated from Japanese incredibly plain to read, but I have no idea if this is a result of the actual quality of writing, the language, or the translators themselves.

Cultural difference. For example, puns made in Japanese are hard to convey in English without getting too wordy over. Then there is the matter of sentence length. What may flow naturally in Japanese may seem awkward in English unless you sacrifice literal accuracy for more 'naturalness'.
