Can anybody tell me which chapter of the novel talks about the 'three years ago incident'? I just finished the anime and I want to read about it. Thanks in advance.

For a troll you're very off-message.

Anyway, I tend to find the language in novels translated from Japanese incredibly plain to read, but I have no idea if this is a result of the actual quality of writing, the language, or the translators themselves.

Cultural difference. For example, puns made in Japanese are hard to convey in English without getting too wordy over. Then there is the matter of sentence length. What may flow naturally in Japanese may seem awkward in English unless you sacrifice literal accuracy for more 'naturalness'.
