Smile Good Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic Anime?

I've seen the likes of Ergo Proxy, Code Geass, Ghost in the Shell, Texhnolyze, Wolf's Rain, etc. But lately I've been in the mode for another good dystopian type anime and it seems like every time I search for one I come back with only animes I've seen before. I would also be up to a good read also if there's a good manga.

Some of the things I'm looking for are (but are not only bound to)
- futuristic type world/robots/mecha
- good animation
- a good plot with twists and a lot of depth
- possible tragedy
- something that will just get my attention

Please? And thank you ♥

It's not futuristic and the animation quality is a bit old but it makes up for everything with its plot and characters. I'm talking about, Berserk.

I believe Rahxephon is your answer.

Ra ra.

Or you can go for Gundam series. And Macross.

Well's see there is:

Innocent Venus - It's about a world where a corrupt military organization has started abusing power. The people are living in poverty, disease are widespread, and death is common. Two guys end up protecting a young girl who holds the "key' to the world, and the government is hunting her down relentlessly for their own purposes.

Chromed Shelled Regios - It's about a world where humanity is forced to live in walking mobile cities to protect themselves from pollution and mutated creatures from the outside world.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Humanity was forced to live underground from powerful dictatorial forces. A young boy and his mentor/older brother figure and a sexy sharpshooter, join forces with other resistance members and other allies to take back their world and discover what's happening around them.

I can say Regios too, but the show is too simple.

In terms of anime, you could watch Needless, but there are many comedy moments and probably lack of tragic moments.
In terms of manga, Zenno no Noa (called Amnesia in my country) is a good dystopian manga to read.

AKB0048, which began this week, is set in a dysfunctional world where entertainment has been banned. It may be a bit too light-hearted for your taste, though.

You might take a look at Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. Though the destruction isn't on a scale anywhere near comparable to the standard post-apocalyptic shows, it's still pretty powerful in places.

Futuristic type world/robots/mecha? Yup. All very dystopian, in the same vein as Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze.
Good animation? It's by Madhouse. 'Nuff said.
A good plot with twists and a lot of depth? Plot is definitely twisted. As for depth, your mileage may vary. The ending may leave you
Possible tragedy? Several.
Something that will just get my attention. Systematic People (above).

For Berserk, go with the manga. The anime leaves much to be desired.

I know several anime like that. Let's see:

No.6 http://myanimelist.net/anime/10161/No.6
Gilgamesh http://myanimelist.net/anime/385/Gilgamesh
Speed Grapher http://myanimelist.net/anime/198/Speed_Grapher

And yeah, they all have tragedy elements.

EDIT: Oh right, try this one too. It's one of the best futuristic/Post Apocalyptic anime out there:

Toward the Terra

An Odd One

Try out Desert Punk it wasn't received to well in japan but its pretty awesome. Just as long as you dont mind some echi-perverted stuff. Its about a future desert apocalyptic world, its EXTREMELY hilarious. Its on HULU

If it matters to you at all, I recently discovered that the Animax/Asia version of Kurozuka with English dubbing by Ocean is now available on Crackle.

It's not an action series, but rather a mystery series in this type of setting Un-Go

Blue gender might be up your alley if u havent seen it already. Futuristic world overrun with invading organisms and the human powers are forced into space.

With good ol' fashion 1999 animation and less then stellar english dubs

This list has been helpful for me as well so a tip of the hat to the other replies.

More futuristic than it initially looks like, but the flavour is different. No robots, no mecha. Fit: 3/5

Some episodes look great, some episode look awful. But the series really has a great eye for atmosphere. Episode 19, for example, is the most effective survival horror I've ever seen in any anime, due its use of shadow and sound. Fit: 4/5

Definitely. The less said about it in advance, the better. Fit: 5/5

More than one. And there's no easy morals at all in the show. The bad things happened long ago and are awfully hard to fix. It may be impossible. Fit: 5/5
