Looking for "realistic" mecha or military anime.
Hello everyone!
I'm a really hard person to please when it come to anime; I do not like when things get -too- weird, I don't like super deform and I'm not a big fan of mecha series with mechas that light up with all the colours of the rainbow. So I'm asking here, do any of you have any suggestion for a more realistic/gritty mech or military series? Maybe something like Mechwarrior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X5LP4hJu9k)? It doesn't have to be -just- like that of course, but it there's somewhere where mechs are more like machines and not super natural powers of goodness and raindbows, it would be great! Animes I've enjoyed in the past is animes like Last Exile and Hellsing. Non super deform stuff! Thanks for the help! Reclusiarch |

08th MS Team - The series focuses on a group of grunts using ground type Gundams (which really aren't all that powerful). Stuff breaks down and needs repair. At one point, a MS has to be completely rebuilt out of spare parts. Most of the newer Gundam shows are veering into super robot territory, 08th MS Team isn't.
Patlabor and Votoms are both worth a look. |

some you could try out are
Full Metal Panic - there is a bit of romance and comedy in it but the Mechas and action in it is very believable. Gasaraki

^ I third the notion of recommending Full Metal Panic.
You might consider the mechs of Betterman to fit some of the bill on being realistic. Aside from how they are piloted runs in the realm of science fiction, the mechs carry a bulky design and limited articulation gives them a much more realistic feel. |

Well if it's worth anything, the mechs in Patlabor weren't solely designed for military and fighting purposes but for everyday jobs such as construction work as well. There's not really any supernatural powers or anything like that with the Patlabor mechs so it should fit the bill of what you're after.
Appleseed also has some pretty mechanical based suits without the glame and glamour. The suits themselves are just slightly larger than your average human so i guess it could be borderline realistic due to the size factor alone.

I know what you are talking about. I don't like it when the mechs start doing funky things like transform or glow or perform insane acrobatics. I can suspend my belief enough to enjoy them though.
Space operas often have heavy military elements and not necessarily mecha, e.g. crest of the stars, banner of the stars 1, 2 starship operators legend of the galactic heroes toward the terra (some funky psychic stuff though) or modern/near future crime/terrorism dramas: Ghost in the Shell SAC Canaan FMP (I think this is borderline, but it is worth watching) Appleseed |

Full Metal Panic only works up as a hard real robot series up until you realize that their are handful of robots running around with what might as well be the very definition of a deus ex machina system. After this Lambda Driver is introduced your mileage may vary. Personally I still don't know why people recommend it as a hard real robot series.
Instead I'd recommend the MS Igloo series which puts 08th MS Team to shame within the Gundam franchise in terms of depicting realistic mecha action. Votoms as mentioned is also a good bet and even includes a lot of good old fashion infantry gunfights at times. |

Sky Crawlers is pretty realistic, and it's all about WWII, and what not. I enjoyed it very much. Give it a look. The air battles are VERY REWARDING
It's not weird, but a little confusing. I had to watch it twice. |
