Well this being Nanoha means I asssume reoccurring staples to well.. reoccur so I expect a pseudo villain to be knocked out by a something like a Starlight Breaker at the end of the 2nd half. I won't slit my wrist and complain on the internet if that doesn't happen, though

There's two sides to the thinking things through coin. You are looking at the "The Hucks are killers who knowingly continue to kill to survive" side. There is also the "I personally know what it's like to be treated with the kill or die choice" side.

If we go by his Dark Piece in the PSP game we can attest that Tohma is at least curious about joining the Hucks.

Where most people see them as a mercenary group of killers who use their infection as a source of power for their business, Thoma sees a family of like-minded victims who banded together in the face of death, even if he doesn't agree with what they do (which is an important detail we should not forget: This is the guy who chose death over becoming a killer). You may disagree with Thoma's point of view. Heck, I do as well to a degree, but it is an entirely understandable one. |

He wasn't even with them for a day, and he was confined to one room and tied to a chair. What did he see exactly that would make him think that? He even called them a bunch of murderers when he was there, before getting possessed by the Tome.

Again, Thoma does not agree with what they do, but he knows why they do what they do. From personal experience, he knows what kind of agony it is and how it can drive people to do crazy stuff. And that is enough motivation for him to try and save them. Heck, even though you said "don't compare it to other seasons" it's arguably the best motivation to save people in Nanoha thus far.
