What made it works is because the Not!Harem notice how freaking ridiculous he looks.

Only the fangirl noted that he looks cool in the getup, though it also made them less eager to surround him.

In The Netherius arc for Athena, it's basically starting off like this. Imagine that, an alternate universe (in an AU fic, lol) where one of the Athena's cast is on an active killing spree, even killing off some of the CCs in that universe.
