I find it quite funny that there will always be whiners no matter how this ep2 will go
If they win under the most dire situations: "fkin stupid plot with newbie girls saving the day" If they lost realistic in this situation: "fkin stupid plot with unnecessary gorefest" If they lost but all survive: "fkin stupid plot with unrealistic plot armour" Guess what people, death is gory on the battlefield. Well, this is not aimed at anyone in this thread, but just want to rant a bit after the stupidity in some other boards.

A lot of people been complaining about the realism of the show's military tactics. Things like "why aren't there more nukes used!?!?" and "why isn't there a mine field!?!"
It's amazing how analytic people can get over this show.

Military tactics are not even the point of episode two. The point of the episode is to showcase what Yui went through and how she soldier on to give humanity's doom the middle finger.

1. They were never invented in this reality. This show does have an AU Earth history, after all. While it's much more advanced than real world Earth in some ways, maybe it's actually less advanced in some others. 2. There seems to be more unity amongst the nations of the Earth in this show. So maybe nobody wants to irradiate the backyard of one of his friend's, even if that would put a serious hurt on the BETA. 3. Maybe the BETA are immune to nuclear radiation. It's like that old joke - If there's a worldwide nuclear war, the only life left surviving will be the cockroaches. As for lack of mine field, I think that's just a byproduct of sheer speed. Nobody thought that the BETA would overrun Japan so quickly like this. So they never put up a minefield in time. Quote:

Welp, finally watched episode 2. Vastly better than the first, I must say, though when the first episode was so dull and boring topping that ain't much difficult - it says something about how uninteresting the introductions were that I got no emotional attachment to the girls and don't give a damn when they died one by one.
On to the bad part...my God, that visuals! What is this, 2004?! I can't believe Satelight is involved in this, considering the shoddy CG mechs and BETA's. Onto military stuff, considering the Destroyers only have front armor you'd think they'd have invested more in land mines and remote-detonated fougasses, not to mention mines can be deployed by artillery these days. And really, all those decades and they have no biochemical weapons that could affect BETA's? Also, I LOL'ed when the second last girl begged for a bullet to the head; with such low rookie survival rate, might wanna consider rigging the cockpit with suicide charges and giving cyanide pills for the pilot. All in all, will probably continue watching this next week. Not gonna wait with excitement though, if these two early episodes are any indication. @above comment of nukes being shot down by lasers: can Laser-types intercept artillery rounds? Because nuclear cannons exists.

...that first episode would have been better used explaining things like this, really, instead of choosing the "LOL supplementary material, whatdoyoumeanyouhaven'tplayedthem!" approach. At least, the army would look desperate instead of brain dead.

On open field, they used land mines, but ineffective and cost of a lost of time and material to make mines but still overun by BETA's numbers, and in the battle of Kyoto, the BETA attack the city from the sea, would you put up minefield over the city with millions of people? I guess not.

It speaks a lot about how extensively detailed the BETAverse, the BETA themselves, and the human technology are are for a sci-fi setting for all this crazy discussion to be taking place in the first place. |

Actually i'm wondering, what happened to the HUD? There's supposed to be the TSF status and ammo count, but all you see is the latitude bar with some cut outs to the ammo or status. Would have loved to see the ammo count run down from the POV of the pilot. Just before !CRUNCH! or NOM.

And we also have to see how the Japan "Giant Robo budget" goes on in the next few months, if that hasent been tabled already... |

Is it wrong for me to say "on nom nom nom" here? And that blue mecha at the end bascially went Devil May Cry to save the main character Takamura. I donno I found the whole of ep 2 unintentionally funny instead of being dramatic...
Ah well, I think it was probably I couldn't take the plot seriously. The mecha fights scenes were pretty good though, Satelight proving us that they could do "decent" CG at times. Way better than the ones in AKB where it was... really bad. Well since the introductory phase is over, ep 3 will be where the real meat of the story begins. I'll keep an eye on this and see where it goes despite it not grabbing my attention so far. |

I'd rather read more info about the influence of BETA on the Earth. Are they like locust that eats up everything or more like zerg that creeps out and completely destroying our ecology? How much of territory is in their control? Are see and oceans safe? Is Russian, Asia wiped out if they got hit first?
Questions just piling up in the head. |

Ah, but then that would be delving too deep into background information that the anime hasn't yet gotten round to explaining, hence resulting in posts getting nuked.
@postbelow Thanks, that's much more convenient. I guess I'll address Triple R's nuke theories in the other thread, and if he wants to he can read that there. |

I've just created a new thread now called Muv-Luv Franchise: Military Tactics, History, and Geo-Politics where people who don't want to wait for the anime to reveal these sorts of points can ask questions and get answers from experienced game players (within spoiler tags as appropriate). As this anime thread is supposed to be spoiler-free, we should restrict the conversation here to only things revealed in the anime, and I imagine that some of these points will come up in future episodes. So from this point forward, please direct your questions and discussion as appropriate. I want to note that there is also a general Muv-Luv Game Thread where all topics related to the game can be discussed. And if someone wanted to create a Light Novel thread specific to the Total Eclipse novels, that would be okay too.

So, I'm going to be honest. I had no idea what Muv-Luv was and expected a RomCom of some kind, and decided to check it out based on the higher volume of posts/views of this thread.
Talk about surprise when I actually saw the content! Though that's not a bad thing at all, being a fan of mecha, and having not indulged in one for a while (dropped Gundam AGE, EVOL, and waiting for E7 to finish). Though my question now is, if it weren't for the romance tags on AniDB or here, I wouldn't have taken it for one (I was getting more Xenoglossia vibes from it). Does this show/franchise truly fall into that category at all, or is it something akin to Gundam SEED? I realize I could do a search on it, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers as much as I can.
